Out of the 8 million worldwide World of Warcraft (WoW) players, 2.4 million picked up the PC game at launch (Blizzard shipped 4 million), out of the 5,000 stores that were open for the midnight launch, an HMV store in London, UK, outdid them all with over 3,000 people lining up! To be more exact on those numbers:
* In America 1.2 million of the 2 million WoW players bought Burning Crusade the first day it went on sale on January 16th last week.
* In Europe 1.1 million of the 1.5 million WoW MMORPG players bought the expansion pack.

Blizzard said 1.7 million players logged into the Burning Crusade within 24 hours of its release, with one French gamer hitting the new level cap of 70 within 28 hours…

Blizzard Entertainment announced today that World of Warcraft, its subscription-based massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG), is now played by more than 8 million gamers around the world. World of Warcraft has also achieved new regional subscriber milestones, with more than 2 million players in North America, more than 1.5 million players in Europe, and more than 3.5 million players in China.

World of Warcraft will soon see the launch of its first expansion, World of Warcraft: The Burning Crusade, which will be available in North America and Europe on January 16, 2007. The expansion will be available in Korea, Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, and Thailand the same week, with availability in mainland China and the regions of Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Macau to be announced at a later date. The Burning Crusade will add a tremendous amount of new content to the game, including an entire new continent to explore; an increase in the level cap up to 70, complete with new talents and abilities; flying mounts; new quests, creatures, and items; new dungeons; two new playable races; a new profession; and more.

Blizzard Entertainment’s massively multiplayer game World of Warcraft is extremely popular all over the world. Millions of players log into the online game daily (and nightly) to play as a character in the high-fantasy Warcraft universe, going on quests, gaining experience levels and loot from defeating powerful monsters, and even challenging each other in player-versus-player (PvP) battles between characters of the noble Alliance faction and the monstrous Horde faction.

The big news for World of Warcraft fans is the upcoming Burning Crusade expansion pack, which will offer two brand-new playable races of characters (in addition to the game’s orcs, trolls, elves, and dwarves), the addition of full access to the formerly-unique shaman and paladin professions to both of the game’s factions, an extended “level cap” that will let powerful characters who have attained experience level 60 to advance to level 70, flying ride-able mounts, items that can be socketed with magical gemstones, and brand-new dungeons and outdoor areas for players of all experience levels.
