Xbox 360 Store Closes on July 29, 2024 for New Purchases after 18+ Years. Online Multiplayer & Re-downloading Still Available Afterwards

Microsoft has announced that this November 2023 will mark 18 years since Xbox 360 launched, and that the Xbox 360 Store will close on July 29th, 2024. But while you can no longer buy new games or DLC’s on the Xbox 360 console from that date, you can still do everything else like re-download already purchased content, play your games offline and with online multiplayer, save them in the cloud, etc.

From KameoGears of War, Halo 3 to Fable 2, these are among the Xbox 360 classics and fan favorite Xbox 360 games fans can keep playing on Xbox 360, or on newer consoles like the Xbox One and Xbox Series S / X via Backward Compatibility.

  • On July 29, 2024, Xbox will stop supporting the ability to purchase new games, DLC, and other entertainment content from the Xbox 360 Store on the console and the Xbox 360 Marketplace (
  • Related to this change, the Microsoft Movies & TV app will no longer function on Xbox 360, which means TV and movie content will no longer be viewable on your Xbox 360 after July 29th, 2024.

Between now and July 2024, you can continue purchasing games and DLC from the Xbox 360 Store and at the Xbox 360 Marketplace.

This change will not affect your ability to play Xbox 360 games or DLC you have already purchased. Xbox 360 game content previously purchased will still be available to play , not only the Xbox 360 console but also Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S devices via backward compatibility.

Xbox 360 Online Store FAQ

To quote Dave McCarthy, CVP Xbox Player Services:

“A lot has changed since the Xbox 360 launched in 2005. Technology has evolved, expectations from players have shifted, and we are focused on making Xbox Series X|S the best place to play now and in the future.

What has not changed is our commitment to preserving your ability to play the content you have already purchased on your preferred device, which means we are committed to supporting Xbox 360 gameplay for the foreseeable future – and you will still be able to play and re-download previously purchased content and connect with friends.

We hope to get ahead of some of your questions below:”

Playing Xbox 360 Online In 2023

What were your favorite Xbox 360 games?

The Halo & Rare games are what got me to buy the Xbox 360. Back in 2005 it was wild to be able to play games online in multiplayer on a console. Microsoft was awesome to often do free Xbox Live online weekends to draw more people into the multiplayer community. I have fond memories of playing through the Resident Evil 5, Perfect Dark, Left 4 Dead 2, Portal 2 & Halo 3 co-op campaigns with online friends. Good times! 😀
