Sonic the Hedgehog 3 Movie & Knuckles Spin-off TV Show Release Dates Announced

The official Sonic the Hedgehog Twitter account has revealed the Sonic the Hedgehog 3 Movie is underway for release on December 20th, 2024. At the same time a Knuckles spin-off TV show for the Paramount + streaming service is in the works for Winter 2023, as that spin-off TV series will take place between the Sonic the Hedgehog 2 & 3 films.

“I don’t think it’s revealing anything to say we’d love to incorporate elements from Sonic Adventure 2 and Shadow the Hedgehog, his solo spinoff game,” said Josh Miller, a Sonic writer. Shadow the Hedgehog was revealed as a teaser in the credits scene of the Sonic the Hedgehog 2 movie.

Jim Carrey may or may not return as Dr. Robotnik, as he said he may retire from acting and just paint art all day, however he may return if the writers can pen a script for the third movie that call him back to the role. Timeless funnyman Mr. Carrey previously said that the only two projects preventing him from going into full retirement are Ace Venture 3 and Sonic 3. And that’s all that’s known so far.

A mid-credits scene in the movie Sonic the Hedgehog 2 suggests that the film series will introduce the popular character Shadow for Sonic the Hedgehog 3, a darker version of Sonic from the original video games.

Based on Jim Carrey’s (tentative) announced exit from the series and retirement from acting, it seems natural to assume that Shadow will replace Robotnik as the central villain for the confirmed Sonic the Hedgehog 3 movie. However, looking at the way Shadow’s character has been used in the games suggests that he may not be the ultimate threat Sonic and friends face.
