Mastery Achievements

Note: A few more of these “Mastery Achievements” are covered in the “Campaign Achievements” mission guides, since they are played on the Hard difficulty mode required to get mastery for specific tasks done per mission.

Mission Pack 1 Mastery Achievements:

21. Defensive Driving (10 points) — Complete “The Escape” mission on Hard difficulty or higher without allowing Nova to be damaged by the Warhawk.

Tip: This one is pretty straightforward. You can take damage from banshees here as shown. The Warhawk only has a few different attack patterns, so you can learn and dodge them pretty easily. The laser at the end will probably get you though since its charge up time is significantly lower than before, so make sure to save before that.

If you’re having trouble, take the fight in as small of a chunk as you can then save. If you get hit, a reload isn’t as penalizing in time.

22. Indestructureable (10 points) — Prevent Admiral Homer’s base from losing any structures in the “Sudden Strike” mission on Hard difficulty or higher.

Tips: This one was a bit tricky in that you can lose all of your units very quickly and have very little income to rebuild it. Every mineral counts in this achievement, so wasteful use of units will result in a failure.

Bunkers at most of the entry points, bunkers in front of the dominion bunkers, and macro buildings at the very end will go a long way in saving the dominion’s structures. Don’t forget to lift the Command Center as well. Additionally, early barracks can be built in front of the bunkers instead of the main base.

23. Less Is More (10 points) — Do not exceed 35 supply in the first stage of the “Enemy Intelligence” mission on Hard difficulty or higher.

Tips: Small task force achievement here. The most important thing to do to make life easier for this achievement is to grab two early garrisons. The reaper one to the north of the base is almost free to take and will help a lot with the attacks on the top left part of the base.

Nukes are great to use since they will compensate for the lack of army and do not cost money or count towards army supply. Building one extra Ghost Academy early and another shortly after will give you the extra nuclear firepower needed to clear this mission out before the attacks get too heavy to hold with 25 army supply (guardians/ultras). The more Ghost Academies you build, the more nukes you can have!

Relevant tech choices: Jetpack Tanks, Stim Marines. Other stuff doesn’t really matter.

Mission Pack 2 Mastery Achievements:

24. What Mothership? (10 points) — Complete the “Trouble in Paradise” mission without letting the Tal’darim Mothership fully power up on Hard difficulty or higher.

Tips: A timer on the mission limits options to fast-hitting, stealthy attacks. Banshees can snipe a cannon then tactically place themselves between remaining detectors to snipe the shield generators. Nukes are absolutely critical in saving time and banshee health.

Start building goliaths at or before the video guide shows. Since the player only started spamming them when reloading a checkpoint after getting obliterated with no anti-air whatsoever.

Relevant Tech Choices: Permanently Cloaked Banshees, Super Stimpack Marines.
Nova: +2 Range, Stealth Suit, Grenade, and Rifle.

25. Friendly Competition (10 points) — Complete the “Night Terrors” mission without killing any Tal’darim units on Hard difficulty or higher.

Tips: This achievement is reasonably difficult with marine spam. Not shown in the video guide is nearly 20 minutes of attempts at the final fight with several iterations in strategy.

Because your time is limited and your damage output was required to be very high, super stim marines seemed to be the logical choice. Fast transition siege tanks could help as well, but they may slow you down. Positioning marines where they can kill the tank dropping overlords is absolutely critical for success.

Alternately you could probably take over the first few terrazine points sooner. The player had already built up an army based on the Brutal playthrough and it was a lot of overkill.

If you sacrifice your main base, remember to fly a building to a safe spot on the map. Additionally, if you are too slow, the Tal’Darim will attack the last Terrazine zone, and you’ll be forced to kill them to defend.

Relevant Tech Choices: Super Stim Marines, possibly Fast Transition Siege Tanks.
Nova: +2 Range, Stealth Suit, Grenade, and Rifle.

26. Glutton For Punishment (10 points) — Complete the “Flashpoint” mission without eliminating any of the zerg unit types.

Note: Although the achievement description does not say so, it does require Hard difficulty to unlock.

Tips: After playing the first two mastery achievements of this pack, this mastery was a relief in speed. It can be completed just by running Nova around the map dropping nukes on everything in sight. Just remember to leave one tech building alive of each unit type.

This achievement is triggered by not eliminating any unit type. This means you CAN kill Brood Lords, ultras, mutas, or any of the other units. It means that you cannot wipe out all 3 buildings that spawn with each unit. Reigel will say something like “The zerg can no longer produce mutalisks.” when you eliminate a unit type. The strategy for this mission then becomes to eliminate enough units so you can move around easily with Nova while not destroying all of the buildings of one type (for example, Baneling nests or Ultralisk caverns).

The player in the video guide had a total of 7 ghost academies/nuke silos by the end of this mission. While not entirely required, it is a lot of fun, gets the 75 units killed achievement, and makes the mission end faster.

Relevant Tech Choices: It really doesn’t matter. Just make sure you defend your base.
Nova (much more important): +2 Range, Stealth Suit, Grenade, and Rifle, and a whole lot of nukes.
