Kotaku: Microsoft finalizing deal to acquire Obsidian Entertainment

Microsoft is finalizing a deal to acquire Fallout: New Vegas and Pillars of Eternity developer Obsidian Entertainment, according to a Kotaku report citing “three people briefed on the negotiations.”

While it is uncertain if the ink is on the paper, Kotaku reports that “those close to the companies believe it is all but done.” One person with knowledge of the deal told Kotaku they’ heard it was “90 percent” finished. A second person said, “It’s a matter of when, not if.”

When questioned for commented, a Microsoft spokesperson said, “We do not comment on rumors or speculation.”

Similarly, an Obsidian spokesperson said, “Unfortunately, we don’t comment on rumors or speculation other than to say that the Rumors album by Fleetwood Mac still holds up.”

In late 2017, Take-Two Interacrive publishing label Private Division announced it will publish a new RPG from Obsidian Entertainment. When questioned for comment, a Private Division spokesperson said, “While it is our policy not to comment on rumors or speculation, we look forward to publishing the upcoming RPG from Obsidian Entertainment, and remain confident in the team there to deliver an outstanding game.”

Kotaku also reports that Microsoft has been looking to bolster its PC development, according to one source. If that is the case, Obsidian Entertainment, which is primarily a PC developer, would be a perfect fit.
