13. Sceptile

DLC Note: No extra Pokken Tournament DLC characters have been announced. While it’s easy to say there’s still room on the character select screen for four more downloadable characters, truth is Nintendo nor Bandai Namco seem to have any plans to do so. More telling, none have appeared in the Japanese Arcade original, which has been used in the past to try out new characters (Mewtwo, Shadow Mewtwo). – Of course it CAN happen, just don’t count on it.

How to unlock additional characters?: As you can tell, when you start the game not all characters are available to choose from in the roster. You can unlock more by taking certain steps, as explained below for each character.

Here we’ve listed the secret characters in revealed order.
Take the following steps to unlock each one; where available.

How To Unlock Mewtwo

Pokken Tournament How To Unlock Mewtwo
How To Get Mewtwo: In Single Player, beat the Red League & defeat Shadow Mewtwo

Unlock Method #1: In Pokken Tournament’s “Single Player Mode” finish the Red League and beat the Shadow Mewtwo event (in turn, this event is unlocked after beating the Ferrum League). Mewtwo gets unlocked right after you defeat Shadow Mewtwo.

Unlock Method #2: Can’t wait any longer and want Mewtwo playable right away? Fans who own 2 Wii U’s, 2 copies of the Pokken Tournament game, and a LAN cable or WiFi router to connect both consoles; can activate multiplayer “LAN Battle Mode” at startup that unlocks all characters instantly. – Connect the two Wii U consoles via router & WiFi network (or 2 Wii U LAN adapters with LAN cable) for a LAN Battle if both console’s settings are identical. Two TV’s is optional, since the Wii U is playable from the Wii U GamePad screen.

While unavailable to select from the game’s options menu (it’s literally hidden), if at the startup screen you hold down L, R and Down on the D-Pad and then press Start, you activate LAN Battle Mode.

How To Unlock Shadow Mewtwo

How To Get Shadow Mewtwo: In Single Player, beat the Chroma League

Unlock Method #1: In Pokken Tournament’s “Single Player Mode” finish the Chroma League to unlock Shadow Mewtwo. – Note that it just seems random since beating Shadow Mewtwo at the end of the Green League does not unlock him.

Unlock Method #2: Can’t wait any longer and want Shadow Mewtwo playable right away? Fans who buy Pokken Tournament at retail will get Day 1 access to Mewtwo for free. Shadow Mewtwo is included as a card (that you can scan on the Wii U GamePad’s NFC pad) in all Day 1 retail copies of the game.

While the card lets you unlock Shadow Mewtwo automatically, it is only temporary because if you close the game you’ll have to use the Shadow Mewtwo card again next time you play to unlock him.

Unlock Method #3: Same as with Mewtwo, fans who own 2 Wii U’s, 2 copies of the Pokken Tournament game, and a LAN cable or WiFi router to connect both consoles; can activate multiplayer “LAN Battle Mode” at startup that unlocks all characters instantly.
