Check out this documentary with the developers talking about the creation of Rare Replay in celebration of Rare’s 30th anniversary, a feat that very few studios have the privilege of ever reaching.
What’s even better, is that this collection will also feature a number of very cool extras to offer a museum-like look at the History of Rare and a DVD-like feel.
The “Rare Revealed” feature includes over an hour of featurettes on the creation of some of Rare’s most beloved classics, including “Jet Force Gemini”, “Killer Instinct”, “Conker’s Bad Fur Day”, “Battletoads”, “Blast Corps”, “Banjo-Kazooie” & “Viva Pinata”.
Other features will include Concept Art, Prototype Footage, and information on cancelled rare games like “Sundown”, “The Fast and the Furriest”, “Kameo 2”, “Black Widow” and “Tailwind”.
Rare has over 100 games in their back catalog, so hopefully all this extra content will include looks at other games that aren’t a part of the collection.
The game also has an NES Remix-style mode called “Snapshot”, that allows you to quickly & easily play some of the best parts of games, such as the obstacle course level in Battletoads, without actually having to play through the entire game to get there. Cool!
“Rare Snapshots” will particularly be a great introduction to those who have never played some of these 30 Rare games.
There will also be Challenges available in the Snapshots Mode, which task you with doing things like getting a certain amount of points in a limited amount of time, or not dying. But overall most of the games will be unchanged from how you remember them.
Clicking the Right Analog Stick will add Scanlines to the image to make it look more like you are playing it on an old TV, and some of the classic games give you the ability to “rewind” play (this will definitely make Battletoads less of an exercise in pure frustration).
Naturally, there will be a whole host of Xbox One Achievements to unlock including a grand total of 10,000 Gamerscore that will be up for grabs! Huzzah!
Only game’s like Perfect Dark Zero will have online play sadly, you won’t be able to play Battletoads with a buddy online. FOR SHAME!
This is absolutely fantastic news for gamers and Rare fans!
I’ve been a Rare fan from back in the SNES & N64 days, and I still have many Rare Game Soundtracks that I downloaded from the old rareware.com website! 😀
Sadly, as you’d expect, many of Rare’s most beloved & most-desired classic games like GoldenEye 007, Donkey Kong Country, Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy’s Kong Quest, Donkey Kong Country 3: Dixie Kong’s Double Trouble and Donkey Kong 64, didn’t make it into this set; For obvious licensing reasons.
I hope that Nintendo and the holder of the Bond license will, sometime soon, get their act together and get the GoldenEye 007 license so they can re-release the game. Nintendo, EA (or whoever the Bond license holder currently is) and Microsoft/Rare would all benefit if they made this a reality. They could even release it for both Xbox One AND Wii U and share profits…
Even still, it’s amazing to me that Microsoft just sits on such an obvious Gold Mine of classic titles. Rare has over 100 hits in their collection, many are absolute masterpieces, and Microsoft should be doing much more to take advantage of this fact (where is Killer Instinct SNES in this collection, for example?)
But overall, it’s absolutely fantastic to see them doing SOMETHING. And you absolutely can’t go wrong with 30 games for 30 dollars!
Heck, this set is worth the price of admission for Jet Force Gemini alone!
It’s going to be a good summer to be an Xbox One owner!
