Fallout Shelter Announced for iOS & Android. Strategy SimTower-Style Game. Out Now!

Fallout Shelter is OUT NOW for iOS & Android platforms and is a mobile-exclusive SimTower-style strategy game created exclusively for touchscreens. It was a surprise announcement at Bethesda’s E3 2015 Press Conference.

Check out this amazing looking piece of mobile gaming goodness from the E3 2015 stage demo!

In 2007 when making Fallout 3, the iPhone came out. Bethesda and the team played games on it all the time and talked about making their own game. But didn’t. However they kept those ideas, and refined them over & over again… So revealed Bethesda’s Todd Howard.

They wanted a game that would be of the highest quality and be absolutely perfect for a touchscreen only interface… That game is now called “Fallout Shelter”.

Int it, you make your own vault… you are the overseer, controlling everything. Just like The Sims Tower! You see your little sim people and all the rooms that make up the vault, and you must keep them happy. It’s heavily inspired by Little Computer People (which in-turn inspired Will Wright’s The Sims) and borrows other elements from games like X-Com, SimCity, and Faster Than Light.

Your “sims” have full stats and can level-up….

You can give them new items and outfits, even weapons. You’ll send them off into the wasteland, have adventures, earn loot. This was all most inspired by a little-known game that Todd is a huge fan of, called “Progress Quest”, an odd RPG that he urges everyone to check out.

In Fallout Shelter, resources are important and include food, water and power. There are lots of different rooms you can build. Some train people. The bar, naturally, trains charisma. While the classroom trains “Intelligence” (the game also includes children).

You get rewarded with lunch boxes full of loot.

Accidents can happen as well… fires, raider attacks.

However, in a hilarious moment, Todd revealed that the “Best way to get new dwellers is the old fashioned way” (he then sends two adults into a room alone where they mate [behind closed doors, naturally]; and out pops a pregnant girl!)

Mating raises their “Happiness.” You even get to name the babies!

Best of all, Fallout Shelter is out now and is FREE. No paywall timers, no Internet required. Although you can use real money to buy more lunch boxes, but the whole game was created with the sole intent as a game that the entire development team would wan to play themselves. Thus free was the natural way to go.
