Destiny Public Events

Official Public Events Introduction:

“Trust me. You can’t do this alone.”

“Our enemies never rest. If the City is to reclaim its lost worlds, Guardians must band together to stop our foes from completing their objectives.

The City trusts its Guardians to assess the situation – whether a Fallen extraction crew, a Cabal demolition team, a Hive ritual, a mysterious Vex behavior, or something stranger yet – and engage or retreat as you see fit. Every battle won is another victory against the Darkness. But our foes will send their strongest, and they may be too much to overcome alone.

Guardians who band together will survive to tell stories of their triumph. Watch the skies. When the enemy moves, look to the Guardians beside you, comrades and strangers alike.”

Bungie’s Pete Parsons describes Public Events:

“Public space is where players converge. No matter what their activity, they converge from all across the game. Some players might be moving through their more narrative-driven story-like experiences. Some might be going off to raids. Some might be going off to more familiar multiplayer-type activities. But all of them have this crossroads.

At that crossroads, they can continue to move along in their journey, or something like a public event triggers. [For example], a big Fallen craft screams across the sky, drops off dropships and the Devil Walker, and I can choose to just jump in. It’s certainly high-intensity combat, but it’s low-intensity in the sense that nobody’s counting on me to be the only thing between success and failure. I can just jump in, have a great time, take down something like the Devil Walker we showed, and get a reward for it. Then I move on my way. That’s a lot of fun. That’ll happen throughout the game, whether you’re playing more story content or playing other types of activities.”

How to join a Public Event?: It’ll be indicated on the top-left corner of your screen as a “Event Incoming (Optional)”. You’ll then need to shoot one of the enemies involved in said event once to join.

This instagram video shows how to recognize & join an incoming Public Event:

This video shows what failing to join/complete a Public Event will look like:

What bonus do you get for playing?: One Strange Coin can be obtained (daily?) by completing a Public Event. There’s also the chance to get rewarded (2) Vanguard Marks, (250) Glimmer, and upgrade materials like up to 3 Ascendant Shards and Ascendant Energy per character; Which you can pick up from the Postmaster at the Tower. Upon completion of the event you will be awarded 4 Vanguard Marks for gold, 3 for silver, and 2 for bronze.

For example, Fireteam group events may happen while on Patrol or within Strike missions. Upon completion of the event the Postmaster in The Tower will have a Strange Coin for you as a reward. You can trade these coins with the Xur vendor for Exotic gear on the weekends. Nice bonus!

Note: Instead of a Public Event occasionally you’ll receive the message “The enemy is moving against each other”, and you’ll find two large groups of powerful enemies starting an all-out battle (be it Fallen, Hive, etc.). When this happens you’ll encounter a Hallowed Knight or Reaver Captain to kill for extra experience points in this random skirmish between powerful foes.

There are two spawns on Earth that you can pretty much set your watch to — literally, since Public Events appear exactly every hour, which is indicated by the X in the following times — and that’s the Mothyards (Warsat/enemy/crew) X:00 and X:30, and the Divide (walker) X:10-15 and X:40-45.

Out of the nine total public events, there are seven other spawns that are hit or miss, the Steppes (Warsat/enemy/crew) X:15-:25 and X:45-55, Forgotten Coast (Warsat/enemy/crew) X:35-40, and Skywatch (Warsat/enemy/crew) X:00-:05.

Let’s take a look at Earth’s best Public Event farming route!

Destiny Earth, Mothyards Public Event: Defend the Warsat
Earth, Mothyards Public Event: Defend the Warsat

Mothyards
Public Event: Defend the Warsat, Kill Target or Defeat Extraction Crews
Start Times: X:00 & X:30
Details: I start my loop at the Mothyards a couple minutes before X:00 sometimes this one comes a minute or two early or a minute or two late but it always shows up. if you kill this one early enough you can make it to the Skywatch for the X:00-05 event if not then you can move on to the divide for the Walker.

Destiny Earth, The Divide Public Event: Destroy the Fallen Walker
Earth, The Divide Public Event: Destroy the Fallen Walker

The Divide
Public Event: Destroy the Devil Walker/Fallen Walker
Start Times: X:10-X:15 & X:40-X:45
Details: You want to get there around X:10 or so if you can, the Walker unusually doesn’t show up until X:15 but sometimes he’s early.

Destiny Earth, The Steppes Public Event: Defeat the Extraction Crews
Earth, The Steppes Public Event: Defeat the Extraction Crews

The Steppes
Public Event: Defeat the Extraction Crews
Start Times: X:10-X:25 or X:15-X:25 & X:45-X:55
Details: Here you want to hang around The Steppes, sometimes an event will show up sometimes it won’t, it’s really hit or miss. If no event shows up by X:27 head over to the Mothyards.

Destiny Earth, Mothyards Public Event: Transmatting Warsat
Earth, Mothyards Public Event: Transmatting Warsat

Mothyards
Public Event: Defend the Warsat, Kill Target or Defeat Extraction Crews
Start Times: X:30 & X:00
Details: As before, this one is sometimes a minute or two late/early but it always shows up. When you’re done with this you to need to head to the Forgotten Coast as quickly as you can.

Destiny Earth, Forgotten Coast Public Event: Defeat the Extraction Crews
Earth, Forgotten Coast Public Event: Defeat the Extraction Crews

Forgotten Coast/Shore
Public Event: Defeat Extraction Crews
Start Times: X:35-X:40
Details: This one usually spawns right at X:36. It has been late once or twice, but if it’s not out before X:39 its not coming and you need to hurry on to The Divide either by Orbiting to your spaceship and coming back or going really fast on your Sparrow.

Destiny Earth, The Divide Public Event: Destroy the Devil Fallen Walker
Earth, The Divide Public Event: Destroy the Devil Fallen Walker

The Divide
Public Event: Destroy the Devil Walker/Fallen Walker
Start Times: X:40-X:45 & X:10-X:15
Details: This is the Walker again. It’s pretty simple, after you are done head to the Steppes like before as quickly as you can.

Destiny Earth, The Steppes Public Event: Stop the Fallen Glimmer Thieves
Earth, The Steppes Public Event: Stop the Fallen Glimmer Thieves

The Steppes
Public Event: Defeat the Extraction Crews
Start Times: X:45-X:55 & X:10-X:25 or X:15-X:25
Details: This is the last one, I’ve seen this one only a couple of times as it rarely spawns.

Here are the remaining Public Event locations on Earth, but the last one hasn’t been confirmed.

Skywatch
Public Event: Defend the Warsat or Fallen & Hive War
Start Times: X:00-X:05 & X:30-X:35

Rocketyard
Public Event: Kill Hallowed Knight
Start Times: X:15-X:20 & X:30 (?)
Details: The Hallowed Knight (or Reaver Captain) is a powerful enemy with high health and rapid shield regeneration. After he appears, you’ll have to defeat him with heavy firepower (from several high-level Guardians) before he reaches a checkpoint and disappears.

Forgotten Coast/Shore
Public Event: Kill Fallen Captain
Start Times: (?)
Details: Same as with the “Kill Hallowed Knight” event above, these powerful enemies rarely appear.
