Hyrule Warriors, as you can see in the video above, is a collaboration between Tecmo Koei and Nintendo, and is being developed by Omega Force and Team Ninja, with Nintendo overseeing the whole project along with longtime Zelda producer Eija Aunoma.

Hyrule Warriors was first revealed during the December 18th 2013 Nintendo Direct, where Nintendo President Satoru Iwata revealed that an all-new Zelda side-project was in the works. The concept for the game was actually brought to Nintendo by Tecmo, obviously Nintendo thought it was a great idea and it plays perfectly into their plans with the upcoming Zelda Wii U 2015 core entry in the series, to diversify the Zelda brand and take the franchise in new directions.

This Hyrule Warriors Developer Diary gives you a behind-the-scenes look at the making of Hyrule Warriors from the developers creating it.

This Zelda game presents Link as a Hylian Soldier, who is in charge of defending the iconic land of Hyrule (the location of almost all Zelda titles) from invading forces lead by a witch named Cia. Cia is a newly introduced character to the franchise, who turns to the dark side when she falls in love with Link. Fueled by jealously for Princess Zelda, she hatches a plan to kidnap the princess.

From here Cia sends two of her top minions, Wizzro and Valga (taken from previous bosses Wizzrobe and Volvagia) to attack the Hylian kingdom. Link, along with Impa, set out to meet the forces head on and defend their homeland.

As with previous entries in the Dynasty Warriors series, Hyrule Warriors is a hack-and-slash action game focused on beating down legions of enemies who attack you from all sides, while doing missions, unlocking new characters, weapons & items, defeating bosses and securing parts of the Kingdom from evil.

Just like in the Dynasty Warriors games, Link and each of the other characters, has access to a number of new Weapons that they will unlock as you progress, including iconic Zelda items like the Bow & Arrow, Hookshot and Bombs. Each character has access to a host of normal melee attacks as well as Super Attacks with which to dispatch invading forces.

This makes Hyrule Warriors much, much flashier and much more badass looking than your traditional Zelda title. Whereas the Zelda series focuses on Adventure, the focus here is pure, unadulterated action!

For the first time ever, players will actually get to PLAY AS Princess Zelda! So. Awesome! Zelda fans have been waiting for this moment! It’s finally here and Princess Zelda looks absolutely badass!

Impa from Ocarina of Time, as well as Midna from Twilight Princess, also make their playable debuts in Hyrule Warriors. And both of them look epic.

Each character has access to completely different attacks, special moves, supers, weapons, equipment, items and looks & acts unique from the others. Famitsu also revealed that Lana and Agitha will also be playable.

Nintendo promises that many more iconic favorites will make their playable debut for the first time ever in Hyrule Warriors, so you can certainly expect Ganondorf and probably even Ganon, to also be playable, along with a host of others (Like the Great Fairy, who is also shown in the trailer in her sexy Ocarina of Time outfit). HECK YEAH!

Hyrule Warriors looks like an absolutely epic take on the Dynasty Warriors franchise. It’s really cool to finally be able to play as Princess Zelda and other major characters from the Zelda games.

It’s amazing to think that it has been all this time, and we’ve never gotten to play as these iconic characters (no the CD-I games don’t count). I’ve never played or gotten into the Dynasty Warrior franchise, but I’ve always had a tiny bit of interest. THIS is the game that will get me to love the franchise. I guarantee it!

What do you think of Hyrule Warriors? Will you be buying a Wii U just to play it?
