Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze Easter Eggs

Nintendo 3DS Handheld Easter Egg

Location: In Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze, Donkey Kong has been spotted playing a Nintendo 3DS handheld. At any point in the game, stand still and if you do nothing at all for a little while, Donkey Kong will pull out a blue 3DS from his fur pocket.

He’s playing multiple games, each time the animation starts it’s a new game. The 3DS games include Animal Crossing: New Leaf, Mario Kart 7, Super Mario 3D Land, and of course Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D.

What’s funny is that if you have another character on Donkey Kong’s back, the following will happen: Diddy will cheer DK on, Dixie will groom DK, and Cranky will start reading a newspaper! 😀

The Legend of Zelda Easter Egg

Location: Go visit Funky Kong’s new surf-tastic venture – Funky’s Fly ‘n’ Buy – to swap your hard-earned golden Banana Coins for helpful items.

When you hover over the Crash Guard blue shield item Funky Kong makes a reference to Zelda, he will say “Vehicle troubles? It’s dangerous to go alone — take one of these!” This is a direct reference to The Legend of Zelda NES adventure’s opening dialog where a wizard in a cave tells Link to take a sword with him because “It’s dangerous to go alone! – Take this.”

Secret DKC Returns Music Easter Egg

Location: At the start of Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze in “Level 1-1: Mangrove Cove” a musical easter egg is hidden!

At the start of the level, turn around and walk left to go back to the crashed airplane fuselage and enter it to find a stack of old TV’s with static snow screens on them. Ground pound the floor directly below them to change their channels to the Wii’s title screen for Donkey Kong Country Returns that’s playing that game’s opening theme music.

Cranky Kong’s Secret DKC Music Easter Egg

Location: Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze is hiding a really cool musical easter egg at the end of “Level 1-3: Canopy Chaos”!

Go past the ending barrel at the end of this level, and to the right of it is a box. Smash the box to reveal a jump spring that you can use to reach a platform hidden above. Jump to the middle platform there, and then use Cranky Kong’s pogo-cane jump or Dixie Kong’s ponytail helicopter spin to reach another platform above (to the right). There you will spot Cranky Kong’s record player from the opening of Donkey Kong Country. Now do a ground pound on the floor next to it to make it play the original Donkey Kong Country opening music theme.
Note: The platforms you’re standing on around the record player are from the original Donkey Kong game!

Metroid Easter Egg

Location: You can find Samus’s Gunship hiding in the background of “Secret Level 1-B: Busted Bayou” right before where you find the KONG letter “K”.
