Customise your items and character and master the innovative combat system to succeed in this epic new RPG universe.

During The Last Story you take control of Zael and from time to time his partners, a band of mercenaries in search of their fortune. You undertake a series of missions and explore Lazulis Island and its sprawling medieval capital Lazulis City, while trying to help Zael achieve his ultimate goal of leaving his life as a mercenary behind and becoming a true knight.

The Last Story features a high level of customisation for both items and characters appearance. There are two main ways of customising your party’s equipment including visiting blacksmiths to increase their abilities and using dyes to change their colour. By visiting the various blacksmiths who are situated within Lazulis City and within some dungeons you can upgrade your weapons and armour.

Unlike many other RPGs, The Last Story not only features a thrilling single player campaign with an engaging story, but also Online Multiplayer options including Deathmatch, Team Deathmatch and Co-Op modes. Now you can battle against or alongside up to five other RPG fans from across Europe using your own customised character from the Single Player game.

Master the innovative combat system, customise your character and gather items you discover throughout the game, and by utilising new features in The Last Story you will be able to take on the many enemies and bosses that can be found across Lazulis Island. Combat mixes traditional melee, ranged and magic attacks that are often found in RPGs with an innovative cover system and unique magical abilities. You will have to master a mysterious ability called The Gathering to help Zael and his band of mercenaries complete their missions and battle vast bosses by discovering their weak spots, picking a suitable strategy and using team work to bring them down.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the story in The Last Story about?

While the mainland of the Empire faces both conflict and the slow creep of the dying land, there is one region that continues to prosper – Lazulis Island. The key to the island’s defences is a battery of mighty guns, which exude some strange magic that seems to draw monsters in.

The young mercenary Zael, along with a band of fellow adventurers, comes to the island in the hope of finding more work. Their new employer is none other than the ruler of the island himself, Count Arganan. If they can meet the Count’s expectations then there is some hope that their unstable mercenary existence could become a thing of the past. For Zael and his companions, who dream of a stable life as knights, this job represents a chance they may never get again.

Then, during their exploration of a cave as part of their first mission, Zael obtains a mysterious new power… This is how the storyline begins.

Who are the main characters in the game?

ZAEL

A youth who, having lost all his relatives as a child, became a mercenary and has since fought all across the continent. Finally tired of struggling endlessly just to earn his daily bread, he now harbours dreams of becoming a knight. During his first mission after arriving on Lazulis Island, he encounters a strange phenomenon…

CALISTA

Princess of the House of Arganan that rules Lazulis Island. Her parents both died when she was very small. She is now forced to live a sheltered life under the watch of her uncle and current ruler of Lazulis Castle, Count Arganan. While she has almost given up on it ever coming true, she dreams of someday leaving the castle and travelling the world.

DAGRAN

The leader of the band of mercenaries to which Zael and his other companions belong. His excellent abilities not only in combat but also in finding them more work have won him their trust. He first met Zael when they were both much younger, and they have lived together since that time, with Dagran becoming something of an older brother to Zael.

SYRENNE

A spirited swordswoman who fights with dual blades and is often the centre of attention. She drinks too much and has a bit of a foul mouth, but she’s very emotional and always thinks of her companions first. She enjoys fighting, and always cuts a swathe through the enemy, regardless of any potential dangers.

YURICK

A wizard who fights using fire. The youngest member of the mercenaries, he nevertheless has exceptional skills. He says little and shows few emotions. He thinks of working as a mercenary as simply a way to survive. His father went missing when he was small, and his mother died soon after that, leaving him alone in the world.

LOWELL

A wizard with a command over ice. He is a womaniser and a cynic, but at his core he is a tough, smart and witty man. Although he always comes off as light and cheerful, he thinks of his companions as his family, and values the time he gets to spend with them. Although he uses magic in battle, he is also skilled with a blade, making him something of an all-rounder.

MIRANIA

Has command of healing magic. To put it politely, she is mysterious; if one is less polite, she comes across as being a little vacant and strange. Her philosophical view of things and motherly nature are somehow linked to the secret behind her birth and upbringing. She also has an incredible appetite and can eat enough for ten men.

COUNT ARGANAN

The current head of the House of Arganan, the family that has ruled Lazulis Island for generations, enjoying the power that this pivotal location for both trade and defence holds in the Empire. He is a skilled strategist and a deeply ambitious man. He is also the one now hiring Dagran’s mercenary band.

GENERAL ASTHAR

A military man with an impressive history. He has perfect control of body and mind – the physical embodiment of a knight’s path – and is the former Imperial Supreme Commander of the army. Seeing the tragedy of war first hand, he is one of the firstto notice the connection between the conflict and the fact that the land is dying, and sets out on a journey alone. Gathering a variety of information leads him to a theory, indicating the answers lie on the mysterious Lazulis Island.

ZANGURAK

The tyrant and king who rules over the Gurak. His awesome power and charisma have allowed him to achieve unification of the Gurak for the first time in history. After encountering Zael and witnessing his strange power, he refers to it as the “Outsider’s power.”

THERIUS

A young knight travelling with General Asthar. Sees Asthar as his master, and seeks to continue improving himself, but his youth sometimes exposes his lingering shortcomings. His skills with the blade and latent potential are said to be equal to Asthar’s, and he intends to become a knight even greater than his master.

How to control the combat in…

STRATEGIC REAL-TIME BATTLES
Battles are at the heart of the game and take place in real time. The player controls the main character, Zael, and moves freely around the battlefield using the special power he possesses – known as the “Gathering” – to support his allies and help the battle proceed more smoothly. You also have access to a variety of strategies relating to terrain, such as attacking from behind cover or destroying obstacles.

Push the Control Stick toward the enemy to automatically attack them, and press the B Button to adopt a defensive stance. Change to “Manual” controls and you can attack using the A Button rather than using automatic attacks.

Before the battle starts, you get a bird’s eye view of the terrain, allowing you to survey the lie of the land.

COMMAND THE BATTLE

In principle, battles proceed in real time, with the player controlling Zael and the other companions fighting of their own accord. However, use of “Command Mode” allows orders to be given to those companions, including for the casting of magic or movement into a Heal Circle. During Command Mode you get a bird’s eye view of the battle and the passage of time also stops, allowing you to calmly determine a strategy.

Bear in mind that there are limitations placed on the use of Command Mode. It can only be used again after certain conditions are fulfilled.

MAGIC POWERS

A “magic circle” is left by allied magic at the point of its impact. Entering this circle will cause your weapons to be imbued with magic. In addition, Zael’s “Gale” can be used to dispel these circles and trigger an additional effect, overwhelming the enemy.

Magic is exceptionally powerful. However, chanting a spell requires a certain amount of time.

Dispelling ice magic with Gale imposes the “Slip” status on enemies.

ORDER AND CHAOS
Battles generally take place between Zael and his companions versus a group of enemies. Having entered caves and other such locations, Zael and the others take formation and prepare to clash with the incoming enemy.

Just running wildly in among the enemy will force you to fight on their terms. Using Zael’s Gathering ability, however, allows you to confuse and break up enemy formations, bringing you control over the battlefield.

1. Disrupt the enemy and take control. The “pointer” line indicates who the enemy is currently aiming for. If you activate Gathering then all pointers will immediately focus on Zael.

2. Fight alongside allies. While the enemy have their attention focused on Zael, his companions have time to chant powerful magic. Allies will chant faster when Zael uses Gathering.

TAKE COVER

Simply dashing wildly toward the enemy will not allow you to win the battle. It is important to hide behind objects and strike at your enemy
when they least expect it. You can also use the Z Button to ready your crossbow. The crossbow can be used not only to shoot the enemy but also to uncover a variety of new strategies by looking around.

Hide behind cover and carefully time your attacks.

Giving instructions to your allies can turn the battle around in an instant. Perhaps you can point them to destructible parts
of the environment?

BATTLE TECHNIQUES

1. Gathering Burst. As you guard enemy attacks with Gathering activated you will gradually accumulate power. After accumulating a certain amount of power a “Gathering Burst” can be triggered by using Gathering, damaging the surrounding enemies as well as causing additional effects such as reducing their speed.

2. Cure. When a character’s HP falls to zero they will be temporarily downed and unable to fight. If Zael touches them while Gathering is activated they will be revived, with a short period of boosted stats. If a character is downed 5 times they will be completely knocked out, and cannot be revived during that battle.

3. Vertical Slice. Zael’s Vertical Slice involves running up a wall or other vertical surface, then leaping down and performing a slicing attack that hits a wide area. Skilful use of the Vertical Slice will allow you to deal massive damage to a group of enemies you have drawn to one place via Gathering. The Vertical Slice also has the ability to dispel Magic Circles in the same way as Gale.

4. Spirit Attacks. Special attacks can be performed using “Spirit,” which is accumulated during battles in a variety of ways. Each character has their own Spirit Attack. Spirit Attacks are activated through Command Mode. All of them are powerful attacks that can quickly turn the tide of battle.

How can you customize your character?

Changing the equipment and armour your characters wear and carry is reflected not only during gameplay, but also in cutscenes. There are two main types of armour – armour worn on the torso and armour worn on the legs. You can freely combine lots of different types.

You can also remove parts from each piece of armour, further customising its appearance. Removing parts does not change its defensive value, so you are free to experiment. You can also make dyes from certain items that can then be used to change the colour of your armour.

How can you upgrade your character?

Upgrade Artisans can enhance your equipment. The amount of gold and items required differ for each piece of gear. Some weapons and armour also have skills attached to them, the benefits of which can be enjoyed when they are equipped. Upgrading equipment can increase or change these skills. Weapons can also change into an entirely new type of weapon by being upgraded.

Many of the items found in treasure chests or dropped by enemies are completely random. If you are lucky you may find something rare! There are also mystery weapons that cannot immediately be equipped. You must first get them appraised in the town.

How can you Seek and Find in the game?

When the word “SEEK” is displayed in the bottom left of the screen, there is somewhere nearby that you can focus your attention on. Press the Z Button to look and search around you.

If you manage to focus on an item dropped on the floor, sometimes the word “SEEK” will be immediately displayed again. If you can skilfully complete a streak of such discoveries, you may be able to obtain rarer items as a result.

What can you do in the town’s Arena?

The Arena in the town allows you to enjoy fighting battles against monsters whenever you like. If you can win then you will not only obtain experience but also prize money and items.

Some people bet on the action outside the Arena. If you win they may thank you. (A running commentary of the action is also provided.)

How to get rare weapons, items and dyes?

During a multiplayer mode’s deathmatch, players fight against each other and are awarded points for defeating each other. There is also a Team Battle that divides the players into two teams.

After 5 minutes the players are then ranked according to the points they have scored. During a deathmatch you can use all the allied character models, as well as enemy models such as the Gurak, Reptids, etc. For characters you have raised in the main game, only the appearance of their equipment will be reflected, not the stats.

After a deathmatch ends you will be awarded prestige based on your final ranking. Once a certain amount of prestige has been achieved you will be awarded with a special title. You can also obtain rare weapons, items and dyes depending on the position in which you rank. These items can be carried over into your single-player adventure.
