Super Mario Land 1 Walkthrough Video Guide (3DS Virtual Console, Game Boy)

World 3-1

This stage is the third area of Sarasaland known as known as the Easton Kingdom. These levels have an island theme. Also prominent are statues which have come to life, among them Moai statues based off the real Easter Island statues, which are enemies called Batadon’s here. You’ll also encounter Bullet Bill’s, which are known as “Bullet Biffs” in this game.

Enter the first pipe you see with the Bullet Biff to enter a bonus area. Avoid trying to enter the next three pipes, they don’t lead anywhere and none of the Coin Blocks have any power-ups either.

When you reach a higher level that features two Batadon’s, you’ll find a 1Up Heart in a Coin Block directly diagonal and to the lower right of a higher Coin Block, just before you leap over the gap where you see a Bombshell Koopa on the other side. Beyond the lift you’ll find a Power-Up in the Coin Block above the pipe with the Bullet Biff. Be wary of two fast-moving enemies coming up, known as Tokotokos, stone Moai heads.

They’ll come at you when you pass the next pipe with the Bullet Biff so be ready. Following them enter the pipe with the Piranha Plant for a hidden area. The final stretch features a ground full of spikes with rolling boulders you’ll need to hitch a ride atop in order to get across. The boulders are enemies called Ganchan, which can and will hurt you if you aren’t careful. Jump carefully so they don’t crush you.

World 3-1 TIP
There is a part where you’ll see a column with a gap at top where you can fall down and collect a series of Coins, landing on a ledge by holding right at the bottom. The pipe in front of you contains a Piranha Plant with a lone Coin Block above it.

Across a gap there is another Pipe which features a Piranha Bullet Blaster (called a Bullet Biff) that shoots Bullet Bills at you! If you stand under the Coin Block, and jump just as the Bullet Bill is about to hit you, you can knock it out of the sky and earn yourself a cool 400 Points.

If you have a lot of time, you can stand here and kill two solid minutes worth of Bullet Bills to acrue yourself a ton of pointage! Remember, earn enough points and you’ll unlock the ability to Continue if you die, so POINTS MATTER! Just remember that you still have half a level to go from this point.

World 3-2

This is another Cave level. Right off the bat, make a stop at the area with four Coin Blocks. After taking out the spider enemy (called a Kumo) jump to the diagonal upper right of the top right block. If done correctly you’ll hit an invincible block near the roof, which allows you to get on top of the cave and walk to the right (be sure to jump over the waterfall); where you’ll find some Coins and a Pipe (which you can’t enter >_< ).

Directly below the pipe you can get a Power-Up from the Coin Blocks below. Beyond the Spiders ahead you’ll find another high-up Pipe that seems unreachable, along a series of Coin and Breakable Blocks. Break the middle one and jump up and you’ll hit an Invincible Block that features a Spring which will lift you up to the Pipe. Enter it and you’ll be in a bonus area full of Coins.

Beyond the Suu Spiders (which hang then drop), Kumo spiders and lone Bombshell Koopa you’ll see a series of Coin Blocks where you can find another Power-Up (right before the Bullet Biff).

You’ll then hit another tough section, with waterfalls and spikes, where you’ll need to use the rolling boulders to cross. Enter the pipe with the Piranha Plant to reach a bonus area. Use quick jumping to cross the donut blocks (which fall when you step on them) to reach the upper exit.

World 3-3

Enter the Pipe with the Piranha Plant and you’ll find a bonus area. You’ll find a Power-Up in the Coin Blocks when you exit. You’ll then see a lone Bombshell Koopa, hit the fourth breakable Brick from the right to find a 1Up Heart.

Following the lifts you’ll see a Pipe you can enter for another bonus area. When you exit, jump at the corner of the pipe to find a hidden block to help you get atop the platform.

When you encounter your first ride-able rock, don’t ride the Ganchan rock enemy. Instead you’ll find a Power-Up in the first Coin Block if you can avoid getting hit or crushed by the Ganchan. A bit ahead of you you’ll face the boss!

BOSS: Hiyoihoi
To beat Hiyoihoi (an evolved Tokotoko enemy), you’ll want to avoid the Ganchan rocks he throws at you while carefully leaping in order to use them to hit the switch behind him.

If you have Superball Mario you can beat him by hitting him with ten Superballs, although this is really tough. Your reward though will be 5,000 points! Whereas if you hit the switch, you score NO points. The choice is yours!

World 4-1

The final area of Sarasaland is known as the Chai Kingdom. Fittingly to its name, this stage features Chinese-sounding music and even little “ninja” guys that attack you called Pionpi. This area is the original home of Princess Daisy.

From the start, enter the first pipe on your left for a bonus area, as you enter hold right so that you will fall into major Coinage. When you reach the area with two Pionpi and a pipe with a Piranha Plant, hit the blocks above to find a Power-Up.

Deep into the level (before the two lifts) you’ll see a row of breakable bricks above a lone Koopa with Bullet Biff coming out of a pipe to the left and a Piranha to the right. If you can manage to hit the last “brick” (which is invincible, but pretend a brick is at top of the “wall”) you can find a 1Up Heart.

In a section with two Bombshell Koopa and two Pionpi, you’ll see three breakable bricks with a Coin Block above that contains a Power-Up. The left-side block to your right high up also contains a 1Up Heart. Try to hit it when you leap from the lift.

In the next section you’ll find a row of Pipes with Bullet Biff’s and a Koopa before the final Biff. Enter the first of the final string of pipes to find a bonus area (hold right once again).

World 4-1 TIP
Near the end of this stage you’ll see a section with breakable blocks and three ninja. Don’t break the blocks and use them to stomp on all three ninjas one after the other. Do this a couple times for major points!

World 4-2

Watch out for the Pompon Flower (an enemy that resembles one from Super Mario Bros. 3 IMHO, like the underwater Lava Lotus) which can hit you even if you’re above it due to the floating Fireball it balances.

The second group of Coin Blocks contains a power-up. Enter the first Pipe you see to find a Bonus Area FILLED with tons and tons of Coins. Enter the Pipe as Superball Mario and you’ll be able to collect all of the Coins! Be happy, because this is the best Pipe in the game!

When you reach the section with all of the pipes and vertical Piranha Plants, go to the upper level to find a Power-Up. Above the Pompon Flower following the Pipes is another Power-Up. Beyond the two pairs of pipes in the following section you’ll find a Starman above the lone Koopa.

The next section features a Power-Up above the two walking Bombshell Koopa. Enter the Pipe following your first encounter with the snake enemy known as Nyololins (the tall Pipe next to the small one) to find a bonus area. Once again this one is FULL of Coins! If you have Superball Mario you should be able to get all of them.

World 4-3

This is it! The final stage! This level has Mario flying with his Sky Pop airplane and shooting up every enemy that comes onto the screen!

These enemies include the small “Chickens” and the larger Roketons (who sit in airplanes of their own!) and Chikako Glitter, mines that take ten hits to destroy. In most cases simply avoid them.

Use the same maneuvers as with the Marine Pop to clear this stage as the plane controls essentially the same. Keep in mind to shoot all of the breakable blocks you can with your Missiles, and ensure you don’t get smashed by the scrolling screen.

BOSS: Biokinton
Once you reach the end you will face off against an evil Cloud, known as Biokinton who serves as the boss and guardian of the Chai kingdom.

The only way to defeat the cloud is to attack him with missiles. Avoid the Chickens Biokinton throws and shoot him twenty times to do him in and earn 5,000 Points.

MASTER OF THE GAME: TATANGA
Tatanga is the end boss of the whole game and the captor of Princess Daisy! This alien will fly down in his Pagosu spaceship after you take out the cloud. This guy is a pushover, although his rockets (which look like Cannonballs) come at you fast. Simply move up and down to dodge his attacks and continuously fire at him. After 20 shots he will be defeated and 5,000 additional points will be added to your total!

CONGRATULATIONS! You beat Super Mario Land! But don’t party just yet, pressing Start again will lead you back to the title screen, where the Mushroom has turned into a Mario head, indicating that Hard Mode will now play when you press Start. In Hard, you’ll be up for a much fiercer challenge than before!

You can also reply or speed-run through the game to try and top your high score, which is saved on your file. Beat Hard Mode and you can choose which level to play with the A Button. Huzzah!

Here’s one long video, showing the entirety of the game from start to finish.
