License issues have resulted in the closure of the eight-year-running Star Wars MMO.
Announced back in June, due the loss of the Star Wars License, the Star Wars MMO has been permanently discontinued. The servers officially shut down on December 15, 2011. No new or reactivated accounts will be accepted.
Sony made a farewell statement on the official site in regards to the closure:
“On behalf of the Star Wars Galaxies team, thank you. We have truly enjoyed getting to know you – our dedicated players – over the years. From in-game events to Fan Fares, we appreciate your continued loyalty and support. It would not have been possible without you.”
Star Wars Galaxies was a Star Wars themed MMORPG for the PC (Microsoft Windows), developed by Sony Online Entertainment and first launched in 2003. It received several redesigns, facelifts and updates throughout 2005 and 2006.
