The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword Walkthrough

Chapter 10: Ancient Cistern Dungeon

The Whip and Dungeon Map

From the entrance, head over to the right and go through the only unlocked door. Jump down into the water and slash your way through the spider webs on the left. You’ll come to a door with a flower-shaped lock. Hit the petals in this order to unlock the door: top, bottom, left, right. In the next room, swim to the lilypad next to the wall covered in vines on the left. Shoot down the spider, then climb up. From the top of the wall, drop down on the lilypad on the left below to turn it around. Underneath the lilypad a passageway is now accessible. Swim underwater through this passage and use the spin attack to break through the barriers. Climb up the vines at the end of the path to reach a treasure chest containing a Small Key.

Jump back down and leave this room using the path above the water spout. Back in the main room, return to the save statue and cross the lilypads in front of it to reach a locked door in the center. Unlock it with the key to enter the large statue. Drop down inside and get ready to face a Stalmaster at the bottom. Stalmasters can be defeated the same way as Stalfos, but they have four arms instead of two, so better defenses. Slash away at it in the direction he’s not defending, or use bombs to stun him. You’ll also need to thrust your sword at his chest if he starts defending on all sides. After quite some hits, go through the door after you defeat him and open the chest there to obtain the Whip.

Go back to the previous room and you’ll see a switch on the pipe at the back. Using the Whip, grab the switch and pull it upwards to open a water spout. Use it to go back up and re-enter the main room. Head back to the door leading to the room where you found the small key, but don’t go in. Go up the ledges on the left of the door and use the Whip to grab the beam above and swing yourself across. Repeat the same with the next beam to reach a platform with a blue chest containing the Dungeon Map.

Head back to the save statue once more and go left this time. Swim in the water and look for a waterfall with a lilypad turned upside down next to it. Stand on the closest lilypad and use the Whip to turn the other lilypad around so you can stand on it too. Then from this lilypad, use the Whip on the lever on the wall above and pull it down to stop the water from flowing. Now swim underwater through the tunnel that was hidden by the waterfall and defeat the spider in the room ahead. Look behind the fish head at the back of the room for a chest with a Red Rupee, then get close to the barred doorway at the front and look through it to see a lever on the left wall. Use the Whip to grab the lever across the bars and pull it down to open the gate.

In the room here, defeat the bokoblin Archer on the right, then use the Whip on the beam behind it to swing across the pit and climb up the vines on the wall. Get rid of the Deku Babas above, then jump on the rotating pillar and climb on the vines to get to the platform on the other side. Take out the Bokoblin Archer here too, then use the Whip on the beam behind and use the control stick and wiimote to turn the rope to the left and jump to reach the lever on the wall. Pulling it down opens the gate above. Go back up and use the Whip on the beam again. This time, aim for the vines to the right of the lever and jump to reach the wall. Climb up and dispose of the Deku Babas, then use the Whip on the switch to open a water drain in the center of the room. Jump down into the whirlpool to get sucked into the basement floor of the dungeon.

First, use the Beetle to cut the Skulltulas’s cobwebs. The back one will fall onto a lilypad and turn it around, revealing a passage underneath. Swim through to re-emerge in another prison cell. You can see a Bokoblin Archer on the other side of the bars, and he has a key on him. Using the Whip, grab the Bokoblin from behind the bars to snag the Small Key from him. Unlock the door on the left with it, then defeat the Archer and get sucked into the pipe at the end of the path to wind up in a new room of the temple. If you pull down the lever on the back wall near the save statue, you’ll open a gate leading out to the balcony where you got the dungeon map earlier.

For now, go to the right side of the room and spin while in the water to leap out and land on the only ledge you can reach. Take out the spider on the wall with the slingshot, then use the Whip to flip the lilypad around and climb up the vines to reach the top of the wall. Defeat the Quadro Baba above by throwing a bomb at it, then jump from the edge of the platform to drop onto a lilypad below and turn it around, revealing a tunnel into the floor. Swim past the fish enemies, then at the end of the path, use the Whip to pull the switch on the pipe. This will raise the lilypad from before. Go back to where you fought the Quadro Baba, flip the lilypad around with the Whip, then jump on it to cross over to the other side. At the end of the path, pull down the lever on the wall with the Whip to raise the gate.

Blessed Idol Key

You’re now back in the main room. Climb down the vines on the wall to reach a ledge with a chest containing a red rupee. Then climb over to the left to reach another ledge. With the Whip, pull out the switch in the pipe on the right to open a shortcut, then pull down the hook on the wall to lower the big statue in the center of the room. Go back to the save statue at the entrance of the dungeon and re-enter the statue where you fought the Stalmaster. Drop down to the very bottom and go through the door to end back up in the basement area. If you head left, you’ll find a waterfall of dirty water blocking the extremity of the path. Above that waterfall (from the outside) is a demon face carved into the rockface. Using the Beetle, fly into one of the eye-sockets and hit the crystal switch inside to stop the water from flowing.

Now you can use the Beetle again to grab the bomb flower that was behind the waterfall and fly over to a rock in front of a spinning vine-covered pillar across the chasm. Blow up the boulder giving access to the pillar, then cross the lilypads over the dirty water. Flip the last lilypad around with the whip, then use the whip again on the beam on the wall to cross the chasm. Climb up the vine-covered pillar, then once on top, jump over to the next spinning pillar. Get off on the ledge on the other side and follow the path to a vine-covered wall. Climb up, then use the whip to pull the lever in the middle to the left. This will change the direction the wheel below is spinning.

Jump down on the wheel and head up the path on the left. Jump on the large spinning pillar at the end and let it carry you across to the left side. Climb the wall on the opposite side and pull the lever again with the whip, but this time pull it back to the right. Return to the large spinning pillar, which should now be spinning in the opposite direction. Climb on it and let it carry you over to the right. Drop down into the open area at the back and start climbing up the rope in the middle. Cursed bokoblins will chase you up the rope; just shake them off and keep on climbing until you reach the top. Back in the main room, pull down the lever on the wall on the right to expand the platform, then use the Whip again to grab the hook and pull it up again, returning the large statue to its original position.

Now climb back down the rope where you got chased by the cursed bokoblins to re-enter the basement floor. Go left where the entrance of the basement was previously to find a chest. Open it to obtain the Blessed Idol, then quickly get out of the pit before the statue crushes you. Re-enter the statue through the door, then start ascending to the very top by pulling out all the switches with the whip and using the water spouts. Once you get to the door at the top, insert the blessed idol and turn it around a bit to place it into the door. This is one of the easiest key to insert. Now climb up the steps and pull the four switches at the top of the statue to raise it above the roof. Save your game, then head upstairs.

Koloktos Boss Fight

The boss will start by throwing blades at you. Avoid that by running around, then get closer and eventually Koloktos will stomp its arms into the ground, trying to crush you. Move aside and get the Whip out. Target its arms and pull the joint inside them out to take the arms apart. Repeat this for all the arms until Koloktos only has two arms remaining. The boss will now expose its chest to you. Hit the red jewel in the center with your sword, then the whole process will be repeated again. Pull the joints to take the arms apart with the whip until Koloktos reveals its chest. Attack it once more and the boss will enter its second phase and get out of the ground. This is basically the same thing, but now Koloktos will move around and try to crush you with swords. When it stomps its arms into the ground, pull the joints again like before on all three arms to make it drop the swords. Then pick up a sword and hit its legs with it to make it fall. Start hitting the chest with the large sword to break the barrier protecting it and hit the jewel again. Koloktos will get back up and continue the fight. Repeat the same process again with the big swords and hit it until he stays down for good. It should take two more hits. The boss will also summon Cursed Bokoblins to distract you, but just ignore them and keep attacking; they will end up being hit by the swords either way.

After the battle, pick up your well-earned Heart Container and enter the next room. Hit the emblem with a charged sword and watch your sword being upgraded! Now you must return to the Isle of Songs to learn a new song, before going back to Lanayru Desert.
