Super Mario 3D Land Special World Star Coins Locations Guide (3DS)

Our Super Mario 3D Land Special World Star Coins guide will show you where to find all Star Coin locations in the Special Worlds.

Star Coins, are once again referred to as Star Medals in the Special World. But of course they are the same large collectible Coins with the emblem of a Star embedded on them that you know from the New Super Mario Bros. games, and this second playthrough you’re going to need to collect a lot of them to unlock all levels.

*Spoiler Alert!*
The Special World is a mysterious altered dimension that opens up once you have beaten the main single-player campaign and conquered King Bowser. To enter it, press A at the new Green Pipe that has opened up before Level 1-1. You’ll notice it on the World Map.

This Special World features altered versions of the same levels (including all 8 Worlds!), a handful of all-new levels (replacing the old ones) and Star Coins located in different spots than before! You’ll also discover all-new objects, all-new enemies, new areas, new secrets, new Bosses and all-new Power-Ups that drastically change things up! You’ll even earn an all-new playable character!

The biggest feature is the return of the Poison Mushroom and an enhanced Tanooki Mario with the power to turn into Statue Mario(!) thanks to the all-new Stone Leaf Power-Up! This is the biggest twist of Super Mario 3D Land and a huge surprise for all Mario fans! All of whom thought it strange that Tanooki Mario was lacking his main coolest feature from Super Mario Bros. 3, the ability to turn into an invincible statue. But weep no more!

The Special World also features the return of Doppelganger Mario from Super Mario Sunshine/Super Mario Galaxy; who haunts your life and lives to make it a living hell, by following on your tail (heh heh) and copying your every move. Finally, the Special World features much, MUCH greater challenge! Are you up to the task? Can you rescue Luigi? BE PREPARED!

If you need help anywhere, please don’t hesitate to leave a comment!

Special World 1

Special World 1-1

Star Coin #1 – The first Star Coin is located atop a platform to your left. Use a Wall Jump plus Tanooki Mario’s hover to get on top. The Star Coin is floating above the block. Do a Sideflip to get on top of the block then hold crouch until Mario is powered up, and leap. This will give you the heighth to grab the first Star Coin!

Star Coin #2 – The second Star Coin is easy to find, you’ll see it hovering to your left above an orange bouncy platform in the section with the bouncy orange platforms that lead up. Bounce of the small moving one to reach and collect Star Coin #2!

Star Coin #3 – At the final section with all the Spiked enemies and the Starman, collect the Starman to take out the enemies for a 1Up, then head down and across the wooden platforms to find Star Coin #3!

Oh and here’s my FAIL video of my first attempt at finding Special World’s 1-1 Star Coins, but I’ve included it because I explain what’s new in these Special Worlds and give a “Tanooki Mario History Lesson”. 🙂

Special World 1-2

Star Coin #1 – In this level, the evil Mario that haunts all Super Mario Galaxy fans returns! :O The first Star Coin is located in an easily visible location at the top of the crumbling blocks. Be careful not to hit the Doppelganger Mario!

Star Coin #2 – You can’t miss Star Coin #2, simply leap over the falling Spike Bar to get it!

Star Coin #3 – Likewise, simply leap over to Star Coin #3 which is above the orange bouncy blocks near the bottom of the screen. Be careful of the evil Mario!

Special World 1-3

Star Coin #1 – After shooting up to the Goomba Platform, head to the left side and you’ll see a Fireball sprite below you. Leap to it and you’ll find the first Star Coin!

Star Coin #2 – Once on the Jimbo’s Cloud sprite platform, leap into the Canon. From here, instead of shooting yourself through the Gold Ring, instead shoot yourself to the Fireball platform sprite. You’ll find the second Star Coin here! Make sure to aim real high, much higher than you think you need to aim to reach it.

Star Coin #3 – From the Cheep Cheep fish sprite, find the Cannon in the corner and shoot yourself to the level above you, where you’ll see a Fireball sprite. This platform holds Star Coin #3!

Special World 1-4

Star Coin #1 – In the regular version of this level, you’d simply jump over the left rock at the start of the stage to grab the first Star Coin. Instead, go right a bit and jump on top of the big rock to find where Star Coin #1 has been moved!

Star Coin #2 – Be sure to go through the Red Coin Ring to earn a Power-Up and a Stone Leaf to become Statue Tanooki. Directly after you get off the rope following the Red Coin Ring, you’ll easily notice the second Star Coin hovering at the top of the wall. Wall Jump to grab it!

Star Coin #3 – Use the flying Para Goomba to reach the diagonal rope where you’ll find Star Coin #3.

Special World 1-Bowser’s Castle

Star Coin #1 – Found above the first Tri Coin Block you come across, quickly to a Side Flip to get enough height to reach the first Star Coin!

Star Coin #2 – Located on the left side floating in the air directly after the Spike enemy and the two Hammer Bros.

Star Coin #3 – Located behind the second Thwomp. Wall Jump to the top to find two Time Coins!
