The History of Syndicate 1 to 2012

Syndicate 2012 is only the latest game in the long-running Syndicate series of PC tactical action games.

The original Syndicate was a 16-bit epic that was released way back in 1993, and received high praise for the tactical action gameplay that saw you fighting a corporate war as part of the Militant Global Corporation.

In the game you’d take on various enemies with your team, assassinate targets, rescue allies who’ve been captured, “persuade” scientists and others to join your cause, kill enemy agents and destroy buildings; among other deeds. The games were critically acclaimed and spawned a cult-following of fans.

The original Syndicate was followed by its expansion, Syndicate: American Revolt (erhm, seems fitting for late 2011 don’t it?) and the sequel, Syndicate Wars in 1996.

The series was highly praised for featuring an intricate narrative and strong attention to detail, with context-sensitive music that put you into the moment and changed based on your actions and a very high degree of interactivity with the game world around you and the objects contained therein, particular in the form of destruction. Of course, the game was heavily inspired by other media, namely Blade Runner.
