Please keep in mind that there will be possible STORY SPOILERS contained below. Read at your own discretion.

The storyline in The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword is unlike that of recent titles and will give players an all-new interpretation of The Legend of Zelda.

Most importantly, Zelda is not a Princess in Skyward Sword, and instead accompanies Link as a friend! A huge departure from past games, although essentially a continuation of what was started in the handheld DS titles The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass and The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks where Zelda/Tetra would accompany Link. The latter in particular had Zelda with you always; similar to a friend role.

The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword – PLOT DETAILS

In The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword, Link is a youth who has been born and raised in a land of floating islands above the clouds, known as Skyloft. Having never ventured to the land below, Link gets a rude awakening when his schoolyard friend, Zelda, is taken captive. The two, along with a rival who has a crush on Zelda, are partaking in a festival celebration following his bird riding contest victory (he’s adept bird flyer).

While Link and Zelda are taking a flight trip atop their respective birds, a tornado suddenly rips Zelda off her bird and carries her away. Link is given the task of rescuing his friend, where the customary green garb is then presented to him along with the titular Skyward Sword.

The Skyward Sword is a unique blade that the game revolves around. It is inhabited by the spirit Phi, a wise sage that gives link advice and imparts wisdom during his adventure. This Skyward Sword allows Link to travel between the two worlds, land and sky, and will eventually lead to the truth as to why and when the two became separated.

Link will then have to travel to the Surface World beneath the clouds, a chaotic and dangerous place, on his quest to rescue Zelda. She is reportedly being held in the “Sky Temple”, a place Link heads for. While there, he meets the evil Demon Lord Ghirahim, ruler of the Surface World. His tribe seeks Zelda, although the reasons for why are not known.

What is known is that the Triforce will play some important role in the game, but how it does was not revealed. Zelda producer Eiji Aonuma has stated that the Triforce “sort of takes on a different meaning and plays a different role in the story”. Ganondorf will also reportedly not appear in this game, although Skyward Sword will make references to his role in Ocarina of Time.

Many more story details and how the game got its concepts are revealed in this interview with producers Shigeru Miyamoto, Eiji Aonuma and Nintendo President Satoru Iwata.
