Sonic 4: Episode 2 Release Date Not Until 2012

Sonic 4: Episode 2 will be released sometime in 2012 confirmed Sonic Team head Takashi Iizuka.

The game will be the follow-up to Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode 1 which was released digitally for Xbox Live Arcade, PlayStation Network, WiiWare, iOS and Windows Phone 7 last year.

Although given that the Wii U will be released in 2012, there’s some question as to whether Sonic 4: Episode 2 will still hit the regular WiiWare service, but hopefully so.

The reason Sonic 4 is being delayed a year? Because 2011 is the 20th anniversary of Sonic and they are celebrating with Sonic Generations (Xbox 360, PS3, 3DS, and possibly PC) which will be released on November 1st, 2011.

To quote Takashi Iizuka of Sonic Team,

“This year, 2011, is the anniversary, so we’re focusing on the celebration title. But moving forward to 2012, Sonic will still be going, so I’d hope to provide Episode 2 then. It was always the plan. We knew about the anniversary year, and Generations was planned way in advance. It was always our plan to release Episode 2 after Generations.”

Also releasing this year is Mario and Sonic at the London 2012 Olympic Games, which releases on November 15th, 2011 for Wii and 3DS.
