Final Fantasy Versus XIII Preview

This Final Fantasy Versus XIII preview gives a quick look at what can be expected from Square Enix and Development Division’s upcoming action, role-playing game.

It’s released date has yet to be announced though we know it will be available on the PS3 platform.

A wholly independent story -though existing in the verse of other Fabula Nova Crystallis: Final Fantasy titles- Versus focuses on a mysterious protagonist, Noctis Lucis Caelum. He is the last heir of a dynasty ruling over the only remaining city to control crystals and must make a stand against marauders seeking to take the crystals for themselves.

Very little information regarding the plot of Final Fantasy Versus XIII has been revealed since E3 2006; however, Square Enix representatives have commented that Versus may be the darkest Final Fantasy game yet!

Key Features of Final Fantasy Versus XIII

Here is a list of key elements that will be available in Square Enix and Development Division’s Final Fantasy Versus XIII based on news and announcements made so far.

Kingdom Hearts Battle System
Versus XIII’s gameplay will be a realistic derivation of Kingdom Hearts’s battle system with elements of a third-person shooter sprinkled in.

The game will depart from the light and magical aesthetic of his previous directorial games (such as Kingdom Hearts) and opt for a darker, bleaker world. In formulating a realistic world, Nomura has stated that he wants the characters to be “believable” and as a testament towards his desire for realistic characters, he appointed Jun Akiyama to be the Event Director who has directed cut-scenes with realistic themed characters in Vagrant Story and Final Fantasy XII. The content too will be more mature and violent compared to previous Final Fantasy games.

Player-Controlled Cutscenes
Versus will have player-controlled cutscenes, allowing players to choose what happens in-game. There will also be new lighting, character model and environment systems, and the ability to take photos with Noctis’ cell phone during gameplay.

Day and Night Cycles
Day and night cycles and cloud formations have been integrated to have a smooth change between the cycles and reflect the mood of certain locales. This aims to create a seamless gaming experience with loading only occurring between large regions. The loading will also occur whilst watching a cut scene to give players a more immersive experience.

Players can ride cars, aircraft and Chocobos; they can also steal tanks. Director Tetsuya Nomura stated in an interview conducted through Twitter, that players will be able to control an airship around the world map.

Real-Time Battles
Battles will take place in real-time environments using all areas of the field, from high skyscrapers to low streets. Battles will take place in a range of areas varying in height and players will have to utilize the full environment. This means fighting what’s both in front of you, above and below you!
Versus will utilize the Playstation 3 Sixaxis controller feature, though no specifics have been revealed. Noctis will also be able to warp around enemies and locations.

Various weapons in-game will have different methods of attack, some will even have the ability to be used as shields that accompany Noctis’s crystal power. Weapons will of course have a customization element as well.

2 Types of cutscenes will be present in Versus; pre-rendered movies and real-time scenes. These real-time cutscenes are similar to the scenes found in FPS games where the player has full control over the camera!
