War of the Worlds videogame announced for XBLA and PSN. Patrick Stewart narrates

The War of the Worlds videogame brings side-scrolling goodness to Xbox Live and PlayStation Network
A brand-new War of the Worlds videogame, based off the classic 1953 film and 1898 H.G.Wells novel, will be narrated by Sir Patrick Stewart himself and released later this year for Xbox Live Arcade and PlayStation Network.

The game “tells the story of one man’s experience during an alien invasion of 1950s London” where you must escape the alien invaders and survive the onslaught as you attempt to save your family.

In an interesting twist, the game is a single-player side-scrolling action adventure title inspired by the likes of Flashback and Out of This World, classic “cinematic platformers” of videogaming’s past.

Not only does it give that unique spin on the source material, but it will also introduce a new story arc, characters, locations and sub-plots that shine new light on the storyline and source material while taking it in new directions.

To quote Patrick Stewart about his involvement in the project:

“As a young boy, I remember watching the The War of the Worlds so many times I was quoting the lines. The alien invasion both terrified and fascinated me and the movie has stuck with me since then. Now, being part of this project will provide a new way for gamers around the world to experience a fresh new take on a classic.”

Always cool to hear of a new side-scrolling action game. Hopefully it does the classic film and novel justice!

Here is a trailer for the 2005 remake of the classic film.
