Resident Evil 4 and Resident Evil: Code Veronica X for Xbox 360 and PS3 have been confirmed for release in North America as downloadable titles for the Xbox Live Arcade and PlayStation Network, Capcom has announced.

This confirmation comes on the heels of the Resident Evil Revival Selection remakes that were circling the web after being revealed by Famitsu. Although first speculated by us to be the long-awaited/oft-desired remake of Resident Evil 2, the game(s) in question turned out to be an Xbox 360/PS3 bundle of two beloved Resident Evil titles: Code Veronica and RE4.

Both of the games will be released as downloadable titles in America and will sport improved graphics (less blurry than before) and all-new Achievements and Trophies for players to snag. No word yet on other possible additions.

These will be a great addition to the gaming library for XBLA and PSN, hopefully further past Resident Evil games will also be re-released in this manner. Kudos on Capcom as well for keeping them downloadable in leau of charging people full price for a disk-based retail release, a mistake they have made many times in the past with re-releases.

Resident Evil: Code Veronica was originally released as a killer-app for the Dreamcast way back in 2000. Afterward the game was released in updated form on the PlayStation 2 (as well as Dreamcast and PC) in 2001 as “Resident Evil: Code Veronica X”. This version contained improved graphics, nine minutes of additional cutscenes and a few minor changes from the original game. The original PS2 release also contained a bonus demo of the upcoming Devil May Cry. Code Veronica X was eventually re-released on the GameCube along with Resident Evil’s 2 and 3 in 2003. Code Veronica X also contains the Japanese release of Wesker’s Report, which shed light on the series villain and what happened to him after the original game.

Resident Evil 4 was originally released as a killer-app for the GameCube in 2005, with subsequent re-releases on PS2 and Wii with additional bonus scenarios and other changes (the PS2 version had all CG cutscenes in place of the GameCube’s realtime ones, which were changed back to real-time with the Wii release). It was also released for the PC and has since been re-released on condensed form for iOS and other mobile platforms. The Xbox 360 and PS3 versions of the game will include the Ada Wong “Separate Ways” campaign. No word if the PS3 version will support the PlayStation Move motion controllers though.
