A new game called Trenched has been announced by Double Fine as an Xbox Live Arcade-exclusive MechAssault-styled mech action game.

Tim Schafer’s Double Fine is the company behind the recently released downloadable titles Stacking and Costume Quest, not to mention 2009’s Brutal Legend, as well as the upcoming Sesame Street: Once Upon A Monster kids game.

Given the above titles, this game came completely out of left-field (although you can’t say that any of their previous titles have anything in common, so really everything from Double Fine is a surprise; All we knew is that they are doing as many downloadable games as they can in a very short period of time) and the game was announced at the Game Developers Choice Awards ceremony along with the first gameplay trailer.

In the trailer, aliens are invading the United States whose military has been decimated. All but the “Mobile Trench Brigade” of mech-wielding soldiers, that is. The game plays similar to the Xbox1 title MechAssault, with customizable mechs. There will also be “stationary defenses” though, so there is a chance the game could be a spin on the Tower Defense sub-genre of strategy game. No release date has been announced.

Here is the Trenched debut trailer.
