Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance has been announced for 3DS by Square Enix as the next core game in the series following the PSP’s Kingdom Hearts: Birth By Sleep.

The game is set after Kingdom Hearts: ReCoded and will include all-new never-before-seen Disney worlds for players to explore, including one based off Disney’s The Hunchback of Notre Dame.

Sora and Riku return in this game, but are for some reason dressed in their original Kingdom Hearts 1 attire, a move that is deliberate according to the game’s producer. Even more exciting for fans, is the fact that the story will tie into the upcoming current-gen Kingdom Hearts 3 title that is in development as we speak.

The game will also add a lot of new elements to combat, you can see in the trailer that a “Drop” meter has been added and that players used the environment to help them battle. The Deck Command system will also be marking its return.

The developers further state that this new game will “tear down past elements” of the franchise for an all-new mysterious angle, and that players should “expect the unexpected”.
