Final Fantasy XIV has sold over half a million copies. Selling that amount in over a month, a month-in-a-half to be more specific, amounts to a success story for Square for the game.

This despite the fact that FFXIV has been plagued with issues and glitches even beyond the norm for most Massively Multiplayer RPGs at launch. This caused the game to be slammed by critics, achieving a very low GameRankings score of 40% out of 100 and a solid 50 out of 100 on Metacritic with an even lower User-Rating score of 3.8. Critic reviews often marked the game around or below 5.0 out of 10 (below average), which is quite abysmal for such a highly anticipated game in Square’s hallmark series.

Square Enix President Yoichi Wada has stated that the company is working on these issues however.

“We’re quickly working on reforms. W’d like to put our full power into regaining trust,” he said. “If we satisfy our users, they will return. On the other hand, once the users say, ‘forget this,’ there’s no turning back. We can only recover our trust so far.”

Here are how the sales numbers per region breakdown.

Europe – 230,000
North America – 210,000
Japan – 190,000

Square Enix also confirmed that the PS3 version of Final Fantasy XIV is still scheduled for release in March of 2011.
