Shortcomings of PSP Go sales due to small market size, says Sony CEO Kaz Hirai. Sony still happy with results

PSP Go being played
The PSP Go has failed at market all things considered, but the reasons for that are simply due to a smaller market for the all-digital device (that lacks a UMD drive), according to Sony Computer Entertainment CEO Kaz Hirai.

Speaking to MCV in a new interview, he relays the fact that Sony is apparently “happy” about the results of the PSP Go and the experience that they have gained (is this a hint, hint at the PlayStation 4?).

To quote:

“We did get a lot of feedback [on PSP Go] both good and bad. I think we need to make sure we have as many titles available to download as possible… I’m happy with the results.” – Sony CEO Kaz Hirai

“I think we did cater for a market, albeit not as big as the traditional PSP-3000 market. It is the first time we have done that with any of our devices, and we did get a lot of feedback, both good and bad. I think we need to make sure we have as many titles available to download as possible, to make the experience as easy as possible.”

“Because of the cost reductions we’ve been able to do over the years, the traditional PSP has benefited. But the PSP Go is a completely different design, so the cost trend is different…. But I’m happy with the results that we’ve seen on PSP Go, including the invaluable feedback that we’ve been getting from our consumers.”

He did admit that “cost was perhaps an issue” but remains adamant that the PSP Go has been successful according to their standards.

I don’t think it takes a rocket scientist to see through the spin, but the fact that they are keeping on with the original PSP and supporting the Go so far is at least good for those PSP owners out there.

But actions speak louder than words, and the fact that Square Enix will not be releasing Kingdom Hearts: Birth By Sleep on the PlayStation Network for PSP Go owners is very telling of the state of the device.

It’ll be really interesting going forward to see how this effects Sony’s interests in a digital download future. They have already stated that the next PlayStation will use physical media and won’t be digital only.

Do you own a PSP Go? Do you ever plan to buy one?

Here is a pretty good video review of the PSP Go from a gal I used to follow on the GameSpot forums.
