Welcome to Amnesia: The Dark Descent. What follows is a couple of quick messages on how to get the best possible experience.
* Amnesia should not be played to win. Instead, focus on immersing yourself in the game’s world and story.
* Do not worry about when and how to save during gameplay, the game will take care of that for you.
* When you want to leave the game, just choose “Save and Exit”. You can then use “Continue” to return to where you left of next time you start up the game.
* The world of Amnesia is a dangerous place and you are extremely vulnerable. Do not try to fight the enemies encountered. Instead, use your wits. Hide, or even run if necessary.
* The interplay between light and dark is very important to the game and because of this it is vital to set up the gamma correctly. Also make sure to play in a dark room and wear headphones for the best effect.
There is not a whole lot to worry about in the beginning here, it is pretty simple to get through. You will want to collect every Tinderbox you come across, I am pretty sure I cover most if not all of the locations throughout this video. I barely use them to light up an area, but that is because I do have the gamma turned up just very slightly that way it is easier for you to see where I am at, doing or where I am going to if you are stuck somewhere. You should play in a darker environment/lower gamma for a better experience.
If you are unsure of what to do at any point, make sure to look at your Mementos by pressing M. When you are in darkness, your sanity will slowly drain so either get into light as quickly as possible, or light up the room with your lantern or by lighting a candle with the Tinderboxes you collect.
Daniel’s note to self:
“19th of August, 1839. I wish I could ask you how much you remember. I don’t know if there will be anything left after I consume this drink.
God willing, the name Alexander of Brennenburg still invokes bitter anger in you. If not, this will sound horrible. Go to the Inner Sanctum, find Alexander and kill him. His body is old and weak, and yours, young and strong. He will be no match for you.
One last thing. A shadow is following you. It’s a living nightmare – breaking down reality. I have tried everything and there is no way to fight back. You need to escape it as long as you can.”
In order to proceed onwards through the game and the door at the bottom of the steps in the Entrance Hall you need to first collect the 5 items necessary in order to create a Pot of Acid. The 5 items you need are a Chemistry Pot and jars of Orpiment, Cuprite, Aqua Regia and lastly Calamine. You will find these during my walkthrough. They are easy to find on the desks as well.
This is the first time you will need to keep an eye out for enemies walking around. You cannot fight them and the only thing you can do to avoid them is to stay out of sight and hide in the darkness. Make sure to turn off your lantern as well. Keep an eye out on your sanity level as well.
There is one puzzle you will need to complete in order to get into a secret room that contains the Wine Cellar Key on the desk. It is shown how to complete this short and easy puzzle.
It’s getting scary now. What kind of evil is lurking out there in Old Tomes?
Expect to spend plenty of time hiding in closets. Don’t worry, you’re not trapped. To progress you must open the secret door, at the end of this section pull on three books at the small library.
Again, to proceed onwards through the game and the door at the bottom of the steps in the Entrance Hall you need to first collect the 5 items necessary in order to create a Pot of Acid.
The rest of the jars can be found in this walkthrough inside of the Wine Cellar now that you have the key to get in here. Once you have found them all, and have gone through all the same room as myself then there is no other reason to stay down here that I know of. Now just head back to the Entrance Hall and up the steps and enter the Laboratory and mix up the chemicals you just found to make the Pot of Acid.
Tip: Make sure you sanity doesn’t get low, because then you tend to fall down and tumble around. Also, you’ll start to hear things that aren’t actually there, and monsters will also know where you are, even if you try to hide.
Once you have entered the refinery continue moving forward. There will be one enemy in the area that you need to keep an eye out for. Proceed through the left door, and work your way around.
The last 2 rooms that I enter, you do not have to specifically enter to continue forward but I recommend doing so for the Tinderbox’s and storyline. When you are ready to move on, head to the large room with the blocked door.
You will need to move the boxes to the right of the door and duck through the hole in the wall. When you get into that next room; which is the room that was blocked via the door way, in order to get into the door in the floor you will need to pull a stick out of the pulley system from the ceiling in order to open it.
PS: As this is the refinery, here you can find a tank of oil.
