The downloadable Metalocalypse: Dethgame that was in development for Xbox 360 & PS3 via Xbox Live Arcade and PlayStation Network has been canceled.

This was explained by publisher’s Konami and Cartoon Network in a statement released by the latter, which basically said that the game did not live up to their quality standards. Thus they are canceling it and will instead focus their efforts on the next Ben 10 Alien Force: The Rise of Hex game.

The game was aiming to be a beat-em up action game with heavy emphasis on brutal and violent finishing moves. You could also pick up various weapons with which to brutalize your foes, while following along to the game’s story.

The official statement from CN reads:

“Cartoon Network Enterprises has indeed ended production on the previously-announced Metalocalypse: The Dethgame. After a lot of time and work, together with Konami, the decision was made that the creative direction of the game would not live up to the high standards we had set for the project and we did not want to release a less than outstanding game. The two companies are committed to a long and productive game development partnership that includes the recently released Ben 10 Alien Force: The Rise of Hex based on the Cartoon Network animated series and we look forward to working together again in the future.”

While this is definitely sad news for developer Frozen Codebase and fans of the mature, animated TV show, it’s also a blessing. Because, lets face it, no one wants to see their favorite TV series ruined with a crappy game. Which is probably how the outcome would’ve been anyway.

You can see for yourself in these gameplay videos below, which show the shoddy gameplay in action.

But maybe we’ll see another crack at at Metalocalypse videogame sometime in the future.
