Kingdom Hearts 3D announced for 3DS

Kingdom Hearts 3D for Nintendo 3DS is the newest game in the series by developer Square Enix, being made exclusively for Nintendo’s upcoming stereoscopic 3D successor platform to the DS and DSi XL.

Although “Kingdom Hearts 3D” is technically a working title, the 3D in the title is actually shortform for the as-of-yet unveiled subtitle for the game. So it is possible that “Kingdom Hearts 3D” will be the actual title, or at least, the official nickname for the new game.

Kingdom Hearts 3D is an all-new title and not a port or remake of any previous game in the series. The game is being made by the same development team that gave us “Kingdom Hearts: Birth By Sleep” for the PSP.

All that’s known about the game is that it will star Riku and Sora as the game’s two main characters, and it is the next game in the series following Kingdom Hearts: Coded (originally released for Japanese mobile phones, but also being ported to DS), Kingdom Hearts: 358/2 Days (DS) and Kingdom Hearts: Birth By Sleep (PSP).

The game will definitely contain some all-new Disney worlds to explore, but the only worlds shown so far include Destiny Island and Traverse Town. Graphically the game looks almost identical to the original Kingdom Hearts for PS2, complete with the same character models.

It’s great to see both Final Fantasy and Kingdom Hearts represented as possible launch day titles for the 3DS. Looks like RPG fans will DEFINITELY be getting their due with the upcoming system, as no less than THREE Shin Megami Tensei 3DS titles are also in the works (Shin Megami Tensei, Shin Megami Tensei: Persona, and Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivor).

In addition to the above, other RPGs in the works for 3DS include: a new Animal Crossing, a new Etrian Odyssey, a new Paper Mario, and a new Dragon Quest.

Kingdom Hearts 3D was announced at Square Enix’s E3 2010 Press Conference.
