First Vanquish gameplay trailer

The first trailer for Vanquish has been released and it showcases a ton of gameplay footage.

Vanquish is the newest title from PlatinumGames (MadWorld, Bayonetta, Infinite Space) and is developed by Shinji Mikami, the creator of the Resident Evil series (as well as PS2’s God Hand, Viewtiful Joe, P.N. 03 and others).

As you can see in the trailer, the game looks like a hyper-fast Japanese take on Gears of War, complete with melodramatic characters and subpar voice acting (which I hope gets fixed). Graphically the game also looks pretty shoddy in spots, but platforms haven’t even been announced yet, so the game has a ways to go still before release.

The aim of the developers with Vanquish is to create a Western-style shooter where a balance needs to be struck between shooting, taking cover, using squad tactics, boosting and performing melee attacks on your enemies. All elements of gameplay will force the player to be both quick and tactical as they make their way through the levels facing hordes of enemies. For example, some enemies will explode, causing splash damage around them that can hurt you if you aren’t careful.

To quote Mikami, “Vanquish will be a shooter that places importance on the good tempo and feeling of rhythm you get from playing an action game. The boss battles in particular will approach action games.” i.e. Bayonetta meets Gears of War!

Overall it looks really fun and exciting. But hopefully they can clean up the voice acting and story elements before release.

Here is the debut gameplay trailer.
