Dante’s Inferno 2 in development at Visceral suggests EA job listing

Dante's Inferno 2 Purgatory videogame coming. Divine Comedy artwork of Dante Hell and Heaven
Dante’s Inferno 2: Purgatory (or Dante’s Purgatory, rather), looks like it IS in development by Visceral Games, according to a job posting on Gama.

The listing reads that Visceral Games is looking for people to help with the development of…To quote:

“The sequel to a major new IP at the award-winning Visceral Games, creators of Dead Space and Dante’s Inferno.”

Previously the developers said that they would not make a second game, but the ending of Dante’s Inferno suggests that the second part of the “Divine Comedy” trilogy is indeed where they intend to go next.

For those not in the know, the Epic Poem from Dante Alighieri (circa 1308-1321) that the Dante’s Inferno videogame is based off of, is only the first part of a trilogy of books collectively called “The Divine Comedy”. The first part deals with the Biblical “Hades” (essentially Hell), the second part deals with Purgatory, and the third part deals with Paradise (essentially Heaven). The drawing of the poet above gives representations of all three spiritual dimensions with the city of Florance on the right (where he was exiled from when writing the poems).

Naturally, the developers at Visceral Games would have to take some major liberties with the source material to turn it into an action adventure videogame.
But already the developers have taken major liberties, by casting the titular Dante as a Crusader, something entirely made up for the game. Likewise, you can imagine their take on Purgatory to be wrought with not only their own interpretations of Dante’s literature, but also their own elements to make it a unique and exciting videogame.

And excited I am! I cannot wait to see their take on the Heavenly realms. Something that has scarcely been represented in videogame form, and never done in a way that really does it justice in my humble opinion.

Hopefully we’ll see more of the game and/or get an official announcement at E3 2010 in June. Visceral Games is also currently working on Dead Space 2 and a Jack the Ripper videogame.
