    Alan Wake Tips List

    1. There are no useless items in Alan Wake, so be sure to collect each and every item you come across. Even if you can’t use it now, you will likely need it later. As may seem obvious, items like ammunition, batteries and weapons will almost always come in handy.

    2. Don’t forget to make good use of your Flashlight! Since Alan Wake is a game based around light and shadow, the Flashlight is one of your most useful tools. Use it to spot Bear Traps before you find out their locations the hard way (shine the light at them to see the trap, it’ll glean off it), find Supply Boxes (the fluorescent paint will shine in the light) and other useful things, as well as to fight enemies (naturally).

    3. Keep in mind that focusing your Flashlight is not always necessary. To focus it you press the Left Trigger button. This will make the light more powerful but with a shiner area.

    4. Don’t forget to use the light posts in the world and other light sources as tools! If you stand under a working light post, your health will refill. Also, enemies cannot penetrate the light and attack you if you are standing in the light’s gaze.

    5. Light Posts act as Save Points, so remember to save often when you come across them.

    6. Be sure to turn every light source on that you come across (if you are able to), such as light posts and light bulbs. If you come across a weak light source like a lamp or a flashlight, remember that you can use it to your advantage to scare off attacking enemies.

    7. A key tip when fighting enemies is to keep them at a distance so you can easily shoot them before they get too close. Most enemies can’t attack you if they are more than a meter away. The “Taken” are the exception, because they can hit you with projectiles like throwing knives. Try to kill them as soon as possible.

    8. Don’t forget to dodge! You can dodge any projectile by simply side-stepping or pressing the Left Bumper (LB) button to perform your special dodge maneuver.

    9. If you choose to run away from an enemy, do not run in a straight line! Instead, run in a zigzagging pattern. This will keep you from being hit in the back by a projectile or sharp object.

    10. This pro tip is for when running from enemies. Alan only has so much stamina. The longer you continuously run, the slower he will become as he tires out. However enemies have infinite stamina, thus if you try to outrun them they will eventually catch up to. Here is what to do: While running, every once in a while quickly turn around and shine your flashlight at them. This will impede their progress and slow them down, giving you time to recover your stamina!

    11. When surrounded, flare it! If you find yourself surrounded by a group of enemies, the best thing you can do is launch a hand flare. This will scare the whole lot off. You can also use a Flare Gun or flashbang for the same purpose. Simply throw it down to your feet and shoot it or throw it into a crowd! Fun all around!
