Syphon Filter: Logan’s Shadow is coming to PlayStation 2 with a release date set for June 1, 2010. Logan’s Shadow was one of the highest-rated PSP games and was the follow-up to Syphon Filter: Dark Mirror.

The game sought to take what was great about Dark Mirror, and improve it in every way with higher production values, better gameplay, an amazing soundtrack and a better story.

The developers tapped Azam Ali to write a haunting soundtrack for the game, including the first theme song for the series, complete with vocals and lyrics. They tapped Greg Rucka to write the game’s script. Rucka is known for doing novels and graphic novels (Queen and Country, Atticus Kodiak) and he is the one who came up with a lot of the hooks in the story.

“Greg liked the idea of playing with the notion of who Gabe’s “shadow” might be and he came up with the idea that Lian Xing, Gabe’s long-time partner, might have a past that’s catching up with her. Suddenly she disappears. Evidence piles up that she’s a double agent.” Says creative director John Garvin at developer Bend Studio.

So what is in it for player’s who already have played the PSP version?

The PS2 port will have a few refinements and improvements over the portable game. The extra buttons on the DualShock 2 controller have allowed the developers to tweak how the game controls to make it better fit the console pad and improve the gameplay overall. There is now a “Snap” button for getting in and out of cover easily. You can now “swing out and aim” with the L1 button, and the game has been completely re-tuned to make use of the right analog stick. The game also features higher resolution graphics and effects.

In addition, Sony announced “Syphon Filter: The Opposition Effect” as an all-new digital graphic novel that will be coming to the PlayStation Network this summer.

Syphon Filter: The Opposition Effect is a story that bridges Dark Mirror and Logan’s Shadow, explaining what happens between the two games: Gabe’s hatred of Ghassan al Bitar, his troubled background with Robert Cordell, and more of his history with the irrepressible Dane Bishop. Readers will even find out what happened to Cobra, the neglected rookie agent who worked for Gabe in The Omega Strain. And the digital graphic novel will come in at a hefty 120 pages!
