Aksys Games has announced River City Soccer Hooligans and River City Super Sports Challenge for the DS in North America.
River City Ransom-spin-offs I hear you ask? Well that’s what they WANT you to think. Although the name makes sense when you really think about it.
In Japan, River City Ransom is only one of several games in the “Kunio” series, although it was the most well-known Kunio game in the States (it was re-released for Wii Virtual Console if you haven’t played it before).
“River City Soccer Hooligans” is the American version of Kunio-kun no Chou Nekketsu Daiundokai (Kunio’s Extreme Hot-Blooded Athletic Meet) for DS, which is sort of spiritual sequel to an NES game known here as “Crash ‘n the Boys: Street Challenge”.
The other title is actually an all-new game which hadn’t even been announced for Japan yet. Being called “River City Super Sports Challenge” in North America, the game is an updated version of the Kunio NES classic “Nintendo World Cup”. The “River City” name was tacked on to try and appeal to the old-school gamers who may remember those titles and thus be more inclined to see what these ones are all about.
