Fable 3 details reveals no HUD. Peter Molyneux explains new touch features

Fable 3 got some love at Microsoft’s X10 event as Peter Molyneux, the game’s producer, gave some all-new details on the highly anticipated sequel.

The biggest change to the game will come from a complete lack of an on-screen HUD, as the screen will now be completely devoid of any bars, buttons and the like.

This is apparently what Peter said would “piss players off” when speaking about Fable 3 earlier this month. But I think most people are used to the lack of a HUD in game’s nowadays. Though he said he wanted to bring that feature of the action genre to the RPG genre.

“Look at the screen! It’s completely clean! Why do we need the f-ing health bar?” says Molyneux.

As you’d expect, the game will use in-game cues to convey the health of your character to the player, among other things like environmental effects. Peter goes on to say,

“The 2-D parts of Fable 1 and Fable 2 were rubbish. That’s why people didn’t change their clothes, or change their weapons. In Fable 3 we’re looking to make that character-customization busywork part of the game.”

Peter also showed off the new “touch” features that will be a part of Fable 3 and take advantage of NATAL (we assume).

In the example, the main character (who is the son of the hero from Fable 2) was going about the town searching for his daughter. Upon finding her, the player can pick her up and toss her into the air in a playful manner. The player can also hold her hand when walking home using the same method. It’s presumed that you will do this using NATAL to make the appropriate gestures, but in the demo an Xbox 360 controller was used (mapped to a Trigger Button).

Last but not least, here is an all-new developer diary on the game which shows off many of the game’s new features.
