White Knight Chronicles walkthrough of the Combat System

The battle system in White Knight Chronicles can be compared to Final Fantasy XI, where attacks are pre-determined and happen at a specific time, but time flows normally in an action manner even though the battles are semi-turn-based. You can freely move around and if you get far enough from an enemy you will flee. Note that White Knight Chronicles does not have a pause button and enemies can and do respawn.

Battles will only start if you are close enough to an enemy. An icon will appear above your head if you are, and if you press the X Button a battle will be initiated. At any time in a battle you can switch to one of your teammates, who will not generally attack an enemy unless you do first.

In order to use skills and magic attacks, you must have them equipped to your Action Pallet first. To use magic or items, target yourself using the Directional Pad. You can also order your teammates to use items or magic on you.

Fans of MMO’s will recognize the Action Pallet, which has three rows and 7 cells that act like macro rows in an MMO. The 4th row is reserved for Item, Target Change, Defense and Transform (for select characters).

In order to perform combos, you’ll need to keep an eye out on a blue square on the bottom left that will begin to fill up as you battle, these are called “Action Chips”. Certain weapons, like the Staff, 2-Hand Sword and Spear will make it increase faster. Action Chips are used to perform a number of advanced techniques like certain skills, combos and Knight Transformation.

To perform combos, press Triangle to access the main menu (while disengaged from combat) and go to “Battle Setup”. The length of the combo you can perform will be based on the type of weapon and its mastery, as well as your total amount of Action Chips.

Remember while battling to keep in mind the affinity and weakness of the enemies you are fighting. There are three Physical Affinities that enemies may be weak to: Slashing, Smashing and Piercing. Additionally there are four elemental weaknesses: Fire, Water, Wind and Earth.

All attacks will have a certain physical affinity and some attacks also have elemental properties. You’ll want to keep this in mind as you battle. If you perform a combo of 10 or have a high affinity in a certain area, then you’ll do additional damage called the “Combo Finish” at the end of the combo.

As you’d expect, the natural affinity for each weapon will be added to your attacks and combos. To check the natural affinity of a weapon, go into the Weapon’s User and Create Combo screens. Before selecting any skills you’ll notice the weapon’s affinity is listed. Depending on the type of weapon and its level, the natural affinity can vary greatly. Keep all of this in mind in order to become a master fighter in White Knight Chronicles!

White Knight Chronicles Walkthrough of the Beginning

See a playthrough from the beginning parts of the White Knight Chronicles early through the Japanese version. Same game, just the menu text in a different language. It’s said that the Story Mode only makes up 1/3rds of the game, so there’s a lot of fun to be had battling tougher enemies online.

The gameplay from the campaign mode in the videos below shows:
The beginning with the making of a heroine. Roaming the kingdom of Balendore. Visiting the shops to check out what weapon equipment you plan on using later, so you can setup skills based on those once the prologue is over.

After leaving the city, you’ll encounter your first enemies. Even through the early battle on the blaster plains will feel slow, once you gain skills to make new combos, combat will become much smoother. Returning to Balendore from Parma village via the Blaster plains you’ll get your first boss battle. Stick around on the plains to kill some easy enemies to level up.

Next up is a dungeon. As Leonard you fight enemies all the while escorting the unarmed princess Cisna to safety. In the boss battle at the end you get to learn how to use your White Knight transformation for the first time.

Now that you’re in town, as your avatar you get access to the camera (for taking photos, can also be used as your online profile picture) and many other weapon and armor types. As you leave the town for the cradle plains, the Online Mode will become available in-game!

As you progress, it becomes more important to switch characters from your avatar to Leonard and Yulie to conserve Action Chips. If you use Heavy armor your action gauge will fill up slowly but if you equip the Light/Cloth armor or? no armor then you get more attacks but naturally have less defense. It’s said Light armor and a Bow or Dagger/1-handed Sword is fastest. Axes are the slowest, but can be made quicker with Lighter armor. You won’t be able to craft equipment until you reach the Ragnish desert town.
