MySpace Videogaming announced by News Corp

Myspace gaming is going to be the big focus of the web-site according to News Corp. Who owns the one-time online senstation and one of the most popular social networking sites on the Internet.

However in recent times myspace has lost big numbers to rival social-networking site Facebook, as well as to other big web-site sensations like Twitter, which have cut deep into Myspace’s success. In recent months Facebook has had more than 307 million unique visitors a month while myspace has dropped to a low of 125 million.

So in order to boost their business following major lay-offs and even the replacement of the web-site’s co-founder and CEO Chris DeWolfe with new management, Myspace will now start to put a major focus on one of the most popular online activities, gaming.

“MySpace is and will be more in the future a gaming platform, a space for people to meet and play games,” said Jonathan Miller, News Corp.’s head of digital. “If you look at the big activities online, games right now is number three,” he added. “Communications, search, games. So it’s clearly going to be a major focus.”

Anyone that uses social networking sites like Myspace and Facebook (and who doesn’t? BOTH of my parents have myspaces AND facebooks. :/) knows full well how popular online games like Mafia Wars, Mobsters and Vampires are (as well as various other Apps), so this move is hardly surprising. But it’ll be interesting how far News Corp. takes themselves into the gaming arena.
