Judge Mathis videogame to teach kids the consequence of crime

Mathis “Detroit” Street Judge is the name of an upcoming videogame starring TV’s Judge Greg Mathis from the syndicated legal reality show. It’s also being co-created by filmmaker Matty Rich (The Inkwell, Straight Out of Brooklyn) and his studio Matty Rich Games where this game and a few others are currently in development.

The game is a third-person shooter set in an apparent open-world environment and will be released on Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC at the end of this year.

In the game players take the role of a convicted felon named La-Ron Washington who has been released from prison early thanks to overcrowding. However he has two strikes against him and will be sent back if he gets in more trouble.

To stay on the good side of the law, La-Ron will have to do community services jobs and avoid street temptations and influences. However the entire gang world apparently wants him dead for the alleged murder of a crime boss. For which La-Ron claims he is innocent.

Rich says the theme of the game is “Play with games, not with guns.”

“I see this game as a way for young players to be part of the glamorous thug life that is so popular in the hip-hop culture without them actually indulging in the life,” explained Mathis. “Video games allow you to obtain the fulfillment of their fascination with that lifestyle without being in it. We’re not going to stop the violent genre of video games like Grand Theft Auto, so instead you try to engage it in a way that allows them to obtain the fulfillment they’re looking for but also give them the choice of going the mainstream successful life.”

“The main difference between our game and Grand Theft Auto is that players will have to deal with the justice system and consequences for their actions,” said Mathis. “When you go to prison, you gain credibility when you come back on the streets. On the other hand, when you go to prison you can also be raped. So take your chances. We may see young people who make the wrong choice and go to prison and are assaulted repeatedly (in this game).”

All I have to say to this is “hmmmmmmmmmm”.

By the way, if you’ve never seen the show, here’s a taste:

I actually find it quite funny that the show has a whopping 3 million viewers everyday. Not only that, but funny that my grandparents are one of them. They literally watch this show every single day without fail . . . Why? For some questions, there are no answers.
