Nintendo and Sega have announced development of Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games which will once again bring mascots from the two companies together this time with officially licensed Olympic-themed sports based on the Olympic Winter Games instead of Summer games. The game is scheduled for release in stores in 2009 for the Wii and DS and is set in Vancouver, Canada, the official host of the 2010 Olympic Winter Games.

Once again the game is being developed by Sega with guidance by Shigeru Miyamoto. As in the first game, players can choose from a “legendary cast of playable characters” and the cast will naturally include new faces to the series that players have yet to see in the ultimate match-up. New events will include Alpine Skiing and Speed Skating.

Each version of the game will be tailored to take advantage of their specific hardware features and will have it’s own specific gameplay and unique modes.

Both games will feature single-player and multiplayer although it looks like the game will only be offline. On the Wii players can take advantage of the Balance Board for certain events and the DS allows players to use the wi-fi for local wireless play.
