Max Payne movie debuts at #1 in the US boxoffice

Max Payne game-based movie shot showing Max and Mona
Last weekend the North American box office got shot up by the Max Payne game-based movie. The action-packed popcorn flick grossed a whopping $18 million in its first weekend in theathers.

Reuters reports that the dark, atmospheric film, which stars Mark Wahlberg as a cop in search of the men who killed his wife and child, outshone Oliver Stone’s much-talked-about W., which debuted at No. 4. Max Payne follows in the footsteps of games turned into films including the Tomb Raider movies starring Angelina Jolie, which were commercial hits but critically clobbered by gamers.

Fans who saw it will be happy to hear that the producer already wants a Max Payne 2 movie too. Although the lead, Mark Wahlberg, has said in the past that he never does sequels.

The top 5 movies (with their weekend & total gross):
1. Max Payne (2008) $18M / $18M
2. Beverly Hills Chihuahua (2008) $11.2M / $69.1M
3. The Secret Life of Bees (2008) $11.1M / $11.1M
4. W. (2008) $10.6M / $10.6M
5. Eagle Eye (2008) $7.34M / $81.3M
