Lightning Character Art from Final Fantasy 13
1. Lightning (alternate Lightning picture)
Age: ???
Hair Color: Strawberry Blond
Eye Color: Blue
Weapon: Interchangeable Sword / Machine Gun

Lightning was created by Final Fantasy series character designer Tetsuya Nomura who was asked to create a “female version of Cloud Strife from Final Fantasy VII” and came up with Lightning. She is described by Nomura as a “not very feminine” young women with strawberry-blond-colored hair. Lightning is her code-name, not her real name; both that and her own background are a mystery even to her, due to the fact that she suffers from amnesia. Lightning lives on the floating city of Cocoon and is a high-ranking soldier (as indicated by the arrows on her shoulder).

Some sources indicate that Lightning (who has amnesia) is leading a rebellion against Cocoon, while others think she is an enemy of humanity that will bring about the downfall of the entire world. It is rumored that the Crystal has chosen “Codename: Lightning” to destroy all of mankind and the planet. Lightning ends up banding together with Snow (the blond-haired man) and the pig-tailed girl.

The weapon that Lightning holds is a sword that has the ability to transform into a semi-automatic gun at will via an advanced mechanism. Lightning also has the ability to control gravity and use it as a weapon or a tool to assist her. She can, for example, throw a “gravity bomb” to disable enemies at the start of a battle. She also has a button on her thumb and index fingers that create blue sparks that circle around her body when the two buttons are brought together. It’s at this time that she can manipulate gravity although to what extent she can actually do this in the game is unknown.

In one trailer she is seen being rescued by Snow who is riding a motorbike where he mows down soldiers with an assault rifle. He doesn’t attack Lightning, so it can be assumed that they are probably on the same side, although it’s not known if they are or if they even know each other.

Oerba Dia Vanille is also known only as “The Pig-Tailed Girl”, as she lives on Pulse and has reddish-brown hair. Her reveal in a FFXIII trailer shows her standing on a cliff as she watches the sky fall apart. Then CD-like discs start falling out of the sky. She catches one and turns it into the summon Eidolon Carbuncle. No more information is known on this character except her weapon, which resembles a modernized bow. He’s the silver haired man featured in this FFXIII E3 2009 trailer To quote FFXIII sub-character designer Nao Ikeda: “Rosch graduated one position behind Nabaat after a long, painful time in the academy. He is extremely talented, though not as much as Nabaat, and he’s taken a similar elite-officer path through the PSICOM ranks. He often fights on the front lines himself, leading his forces at the forefront, and the scar down his forehead reflects the harsh training and fighting he’s undertaken.”

Jihl Nabaat in Final Fantasy 13
10. Jihl Nabaat, the commander of PSICOM, with her right-hand man in PSICOM being Yaag Rosch. She is cruel and heartless, which is probably why she’s working for the intelligence force of the theocratic government that Lightning and company are fighting against. To quote FFXIII sub-character designer Nao Ikeda: “After graduating first in her class, Nabaat exercised her skills effortlessly within PSICOM and advanced steadily through the ranks. She handles daily policy and takes strategic command of the military when called for, so PSICOM’s soldiers are generally always following her orders.”

* Shiva
* Ifrit
* Carbuncle
* Siren (confirmed, but no artwork yet)
* Odin (confirmed as a PlayArts figure)

Final Fantasy XIII’s landscape (click for artwork) is set in a futuristic world controlling advanced technology and magical crystals and is the main title in a series of games all based on the FFXIII world called the Fabula Nova Crystallis Final Fantasy XIII collection. The other games include Final Fantasy Versus XIII and Final Fantasy Agito XIII. The games are not necessarily directly connected to each other.

In Final Fantasy XIII, Pulse is the name of the world the game is based on. Pulse has had an evil history which has resulted in the construction of a floating Utopian city above called Cocoon which is a huge ship that inhabits hundreds of people. Because of the past history of the world, the citizens of Cocoon fear the world below (only exasperated when Pulse breaks it’s allegiance to Cocoon and starts attacking it). Lightning is the heroine of the game although she won’t be the only main character.

A few other details about FFXIII include

* Crystals have the ability to create life forms and objects.
* Crystals are also the power which decided to create Cocoon to protect the threatened people on Pulse.
* It is believed that the Crystals gave instructions to the super-natural beings known as Farsi who were responsible for constructing Cocoon from an “infection” on Pulse.
* There is a group of people known as the Lusi who carry out missions for the Farsi and follow the will of the Crystals.

During the E3 2006 FFXIII trailer, a train full of prisoners is involved in a crash and comes under attack. It is believed that Cocoon’s Holy Government thinks that these prisoners are infected and has sentenced them to return to Pulse.
