Bayonetta for Xbox 360 & PS3 is an all-new action game from Devil May Cry creator Hideki Kamiya, who now works at PlatinumGames (made up mostly of former employees of Capcoms Clover studio, who created Viewtiful Joe and Okami). The game will be published by Sega.

Beyonetta tells the story of the eponymous witch, Bayonetta, who has guns on her feet and hands, and must run around blowing off the heads of demons that masquerade as angels in a modern day setting.

Beyonetta Debut Trailer

If you are into the Devil May Cry series then you’ll be right at home with Bayonetta, which is very similar from early impressions of the game. A few differences include Magic attacks in addition to the standard Melee and weapon attacks (via the guns on her hands and feet) that you’d expect. Also unique is the fact that Bayonetta can attack enemies with her hair, which will morph into various forms to attack enemies, including turning into fists and feet to hammer foes. You’ll also be able to slow down time via your magic as well as perform finishing moves on enemies.

Many of the finishing moves involve summoning exotic torture devices from out of thin air to annihilate an enemy. For example, for one finishing move she summons a guillotine, which she then foot-stomps an enemy into before hitting the switch and watching the blade fall to cut off the enemies head. She’ll reportedly have different finishing moves for various enemies. This includes insanely special finishers for the game’s giant bosses. One of the bosses was a huge two-handed axe-wielder. After defeating him by attacking his sides and back (since frontal attacks were too dangerous), Bayonetta finishes him off by morphing her hair into a massive dragon’s head, which bites straight into the bosses torso to bite him in half.

Bayonetta is still quite a ways off and won’t be coming until sometime in 2009. Check out the debut trailer (above) and an interview with Hideki Kamiya from E3 2008 (below).

Short interview with creator

“Seven years ago I created Devil May Cry. Many of you have said that it kick-started the action genre into 3D, but did it really? Have action games really progressed past what we accomplished seven years ago? I don’t believe they have. We as creators have squandered the opportunity to make things better, smoother, more intense, more engaging; that is why I have come back to 3D action. It is time to make good on the promise of seven years ago and I feel that we are the only team who can do it. The era of style and action is over. Today we take action to its climax,” says Hideki Kamiya. Bold claims indeed.
