Sony has revealed Resistance Retribution at E3 2008 as the first time the series has come to the PSP.

Resistance Retribution is a brand new installment in the Resistance line designed by Sony Bend (the same developers that created the Syphon Filter PSP games) and takes place between the first and second games; set in France. Unlike the console versions of either Resistance: Fall of Man or Resistance 2, Resistance Retribution is played from a third-person perspective instead first-person, which creates an entirely different kind of dynamic. You may also wonder how the controls would work on the PSP with it’s one control stick, this was solved by a sort of automatic cover system where the game will automatically go into cover when you get behind an object and pop-out when you shoot. The system was custom built for the PSP to make the game easier to play with the systems button layout. I must say that the gameplay looks really nice and fun from what I’ve seen.

The game will feature familiar weapons, shields and enemies from the series (including both Resistance 1 & 2) as well as some big enemies, if not quite as giant as what was seen in the Resistance 2 videos.

Resistance Retribution will also debut some brand new weapons, including weapons that merge alien and hybrid technology (such as the BM001 Razor and the Longbow 1S-1K) and a “one shot, one kill” sniper rifle. Also returning are favorites such as the Auger, Carbine and LAARK. Familiar enemies include the Titan, Slipskull, Hybrids and Leapers. New enemies include the Hag and Cloven.

As far as tech is concerned, Resistance Retribution uses a third-generation of the Bend Studios PSP engine, which allows for much more populated areas than their previous Syphon Filter games and includes higher detailed character models than anything seen before. Also in play are high-resolution effects and a new Memory Buffer system that is used to create bigger worlds for you to play around in.

Resistance Retribution will include both local and online multiplayer and features 8-player matches. Modes include Team Deathmatch, Capture the Flag, Containment and Assimilation.

Here is the plot for Resistance Retribution.

Set in the weeks after Resistance: Fall of Man, Retribution follows the story of former British Marine James Grayson. After a personal tragedy – he is forced to kill his own brother inside a Chimeran conversion center – Grayson goes on a vendetta to destroy every conversion center he can find. Eventually Grayson learns that his efforts have been futile . . . in Western Europe the Chimera have evolved a new method of converting humans to aliens. The European resistance – the Maquis – enlist Grayson’s help, and he joins Cartwright and Parker in Operation Overstrike. The war to retake the European continent has begun.
