Downloading complete DS games via the Wii in Nintendo’s planned future

Nintendo DS Lite Crimson & BlackYou might have heard the upcoming Wii channel called “Everyone’s Nintendo Channel” will allow you to download DS demos to your Wii and then transfer them to your DS (Lite). But did you also know this might be taken a step further by allowing you to download full DS games in the future? Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime said this in a recent interview. To quote:

“Mr. Fils-Amie said that future DS device will be more tightly integrated with its Wii console. Complete games as well as game samplers will be able to be downloaded into the Wii using its broadband connection, and then transferred wirelessly to the DS,” reports the New York Times.

Makes you wonder if he’s talking about transferring emulated Wii Virtual Console games to the DS or instead small but full DS games, similar to those WiiWare download-only games that will be coming to the Wii in March 2008. Then again, for all we know he’s talking about a next-gen DS2 that has enough internal memory to store bigger downloadable DS games than the Wii can. Time will tell, sooner or later, time will tell.

Update January 5: Sadly the New York Times incorrectly referred to future capabilities of the device. The statement that complete Nintendo DS games will eventually be able to be downloaded into the device via a wireless connection with the company’s Wii game console is incorrect. Users can download games to play on Wii, and, in the future, the Nintendo DS will be able to receive demo versions of some DS games from Wii, but not the entire game. The demo will be erased once the Nintendo DS is turned off.
