GameTap losing over 70 games on December 11th. Promises to fill void in 2008

GameTap selectionGameTap recently announced they will be removing 70+ games from their service on December 11th, 2007. Apparently with EA, Interplay and other publisher contracts ending this year. They are attempting to fill the void with games from publisher Meridian4. But this makes GameTap’s celebration of their 1000th game on the online game playing service a bit bittersweet.

Some of the more popular (and soon removed) games include: Command & Conquer / Red Alert (PC), Descent / II / 3 / Freespace (PC), Earthworm Jim / 2 / 3D, Impossible Mission II (Commodore 64), MDK (PC), Populous: The Beginning (PC), Alpha Centauri (PC), Sim City Classic / 2000 (PC), Tetris (8-Bit), Ultima / II / III / IV / V / VI (DOS), Wing Commander / II / IV (DOS), Winter Games (Commodore 64), and Worms 2 / Armageddon / Blast (PC).

On the GameTap forum a representative looks at the future: “2008 is shaping up to be just as great with some incredible deals in the pipeline. Not to mention some great additions to our Indies program, the next 4 episodes of Sam & Max Season Two, American McGee’s Grimm, Re\Visioned 2.0: Activision 2600, and a ton more games for both our free users and subscribers. We understand there are some disappointed GameTap fans out there, but we hope that disappointment is tempered by the mountains of other great stuff we offer.”
