White Knight Story (PS3) preview and interview reveals tactical battle system and in-depth character customization in this beautiful RPG

White Knight Story Screenshot (PS3)White Knight Story is an upcoming RPG for the Playstation 3 being developed by Level-5, the guys that brought us the Dark Cloud series and Rogue Galaxy on PS2. The game won’t hit until 2008 though so it’s still a ways off.

White Knight Story isn’t action focused, so instead the developers wanted to put their energy towards making the game more tactical, and as such, you will need to set-up your function slots to best tackle the specific enemy you are fighting. As you can imagine, this will make the game slower in pace as you don’t want to just dive right into battles without being prepared.

Level-5's previous work includes the PS2 RPG Rogue GalaxyDuring battle you will want to chain attacks together, and as you play you will gain more and more attacks to put into your repertoire of moves. One very interesting and unique aspect of White Knight Story is the character creation. The game contains a deep character creation tool that allows you to shape your character how you see fit, and then play with that creation in-game, a rarity in Japanese RPGs. You can also control the characters the game gives you outside of the main hero, if you so wish. The game will also incorporate online-functionality, although it’s too early to know to what degree.

I must say that White Knight Story is looking mighty-impressive. Not only are the graphics beautiful (both in-game and CG), but the battle system also looks fun and unique and I like the fact that the game will be more strategic than your typical RPG fare. This is definitely one to watch and easily one of my most anticipated PS3 titles. For more info on the game check out the video interview below.
