StarCraft 2 to be a World of StarCraft MMO RTS?

World of StarCraft fake logo
Don’t worry about the fake logo of World of StarCraft, no official MMORPG confirmation yet, but what StarCraft RTS fans might be worried about is the MMO revelation from CVG sources:

Best Seller Series: Starcraft for PC“The long-rumoured new instalment of Blizzard‘s massive StarCraft series is set to be unveiled later this month – and it’s another massively-multiplayer online game in the style of World of Warcraft. The title is in fact an online spin-off and not a new RTS game as previously assumed.”

If this turns out to be true then it seem more likely that since World of Warcraft is an MMORPG, that World of StarCraft could be an MMORTS. At least if both want to coexist they’d have to be very different, because it would be stupid for Blizzard to let their 8.5 million World of Warcraft worldwide users to choose between the two MMOs.

World of Warcraft Expansion: Burning Crusade for PCThe whole situation is made extra confusing since developer Blizzard has said in June 2006 that “We do not currently have any MMO development plans beyond the upcoming expansion for World of Warcraft, and furthermore, we don’t have any intentions to focus on only one genre or platform with our future games.”

We’ll get final confirmation about the fate of StarCraft 2 at Blizzard’s World Wide Invitational (WWI) event in Seoul, South Korea, on May 19-20, 2007.
