Sony PS3 launched in Europe, Australia and New Zealand today; First 100 UK buyers got a free HD TV

PS3 UK launchToday the Sony’s PlayStation 3 has officially launched in Europe, Australia & New Zealand! The UK’s Virgin Megastore on Oxford Street welcomed the first customers wanting to buy a PS3 at noon Wednesday.

At the front of the line was 17 year-old Ritatsu Thomas, who had turned up outside the store at 5AM. He told GI.biz, “I went to the Wii launch and I got there quite late. I didn’t get my Wii that day, and I was quite disappointed. This was my chance to do it right. I didn’t come as early as the Wii launch people came because I knew PS3 isn’t that hyped – that’s why there are only three people here to buy PS3s. Still, as long as I’m number one.”

UK Sony PS3The queue-fan (or die-hard game fan, one of the two) got his PS3 at midnight in the night from Thursday to Friday, where he said: “I was expecting at least 20 people by now, but not many people have turned up. It’s kind of weird.” So before over 125 fellow gamers joined him last night, was Thomas tempted to give up and go home? “Slightly, yes, I am actually.” When it comes to PS3 games, Thomas said he’s most looking forward to Metal Gear Solid 4 and Final Fantasy XIII. Asked what titles he’ll be picking up at midnight he replied, “Nothing, except the free game they give me [Resistance: Fall of Man]. I might buy Motorstorm as well.”

But he’s glad he didn’t go home as the BBC reports Sony gave away free 46-inch Bravia HD TVs and a taxi home to the first 100 UK PS3 buyers at the event!
