This is a video for the re-release of the Famicom/NES game Super Mario Bros 3 (SMB3) on the GameBoy Advance (GBA) in Japan on July 11th, 2003. Nintendo wanted to make a big deal out of it, so had (what I think is) one of the most fantastic video game commercials ever made.
It’s really mostly a celebration of the free-spirited Super Mario world. The video centers around students rushing out of school on the release day of SMB3 for GBA, to get to the gamestore the fastest way possible. The sign at the end of the video says “Super Mario Bros 3 available now!”
This “School’s Out” ad featured 500 extras, was directed by Anthony Atanasio, with the help of famous Hong Kong stunt coordinator/stuntman Ridley Tsui. Let’s go behind the scenes with the “making of” for almost 8 minutes.
