DS Lite sells 136,500 units in first two days on U.S. shelves!

Nintendo DS New Super Mario BrosNintendo’s DS Lite is selling like hot cakes in the United States after it’s phenomenal debut in Japan, where the system sold out everywhere and was hard to come by for months. And now Nintendo has struck gold again, as DS Lite fever has also hit America! Two days ago the system hit store shelves, and already it has sold over 136,500 units! That is an incredible number that is on pace to match sales of the original DS, which launched in Nov. 2004. The new DS Lite is also outpacing initial sales of Nintendo’s other re-design, that of the Game Boy Advance SP.

Nintendo sold more than 1 million DS’ in its first month in both America and Japan, and by late April 2005, it sold more than 5 million units worldwide. As of late March, the combined total of DS’ sold was more than 17 million worldwide. The DS Lite will be released in Europe on June 23.

The DS Lite is also helping spur sales of DS software. Since the DS Lite’s launch, Nintendo says that relative to the previous week, sales of New Super Mario Bros. doubled and sales of Brain Age: Train Your Brain in Minutes a Day tripled.
